KWR: Anyone else have "chicken skin" on their arms?

Future Mrs. Webb!, on February 15, 2016 at 3:35 PM Posted in Fitness and Health 0 29

My whole life, I've had keratosis pilaris (or what some call chicken skin) on my arms and legs. I'd really like to get rid of it or at least diminish it before I walk down the aisle. What have you done to make yours less noticeable, or to remove it?

I thought I once read it was caused by an EFA deficiency...not sure if that is true or not. Do you have a dermatologist?

My wife has it. She cleaned up her diet (ate paleo) and uses only goat milks soap and it almost went away completely. As soon as she started eating some grains and stuff, it flared back up. We didn't realize how much diet affected it until she did the Whole30.

@Michelle: No, I've never been to a dermatologist. I don't know if I have an EFA deficiency, but I know I have a vitamin B12 deficiency.

I don't there is going to be a one-size-fits-all answer. Something is out of whack, but figuring out what is up to you (and your doctor(s)).

ETA: Please don't try any crazy diets or cleanses without it being warranted.

I have that on my arms and thighs, I always use a good body wash and loofa every day when I shower and it helps quite a bit! But I also used to buy organic soap that made my skin amazing, but I would try a good soap and loofa to exfoliate! Good Luck I know I am dealing with the same issue

Paula's Choice makes wipes that helped me a TON with this. They're expensive so I'm curious to see if anyone knows of a cheaper alternative.

I used to have this as well. I stopped eating grains (not by choice- due to the horrible side effects). It is pretty much nonexistent now.

I have it too - that's so interesting about the grains! My derm just sent me home with a scrip for ammonium lactate cream (available OTC). But honestly, it apparently bothered me enough to ask about it, but not enough for me to use the cream consistently.

I've been eating way too much grain (carbs more generally) lately anyway :p

If what you're talking about are those stupid red mini bumps, Coconut oil helped me out a ton.

I just started using a body scrub from The Body Shop and I would exfoliate my arms with it every other day. Within a few weeks it was gone.

@Emily: I've read that, unfortunately I'm allergic to coconut so that would make things a lot worse!

My fiancé has it and he uses body wash, a good loofa, and lotion and it clears it up, not completely but better than not using that stuff. I would look into some Shea butter lotion (bath and body works has some good ones).

Eating gluten free has made mine go away on my arms! It spent so much of my life trying to figure out what was up with my arms, then bam, I avoid gluten for other health reasons but this was just a nice bonus.

DERMAdoctor has a KP treatment line called KP Duty. When I've used the products together, consistently for a good period of time, I've noticed a difference. A dr once told me regular microdermabrasion should help, but it's costly and won't cure it permanently.

When I was in High school I had that on the back of my arms. I used this lotion and it rally helped!

I started getting bikini waxes and was getting bad ingrown hairs, the woman suggested I buy this. She told me that it also works on the little bumps people sometimes get on their arms and legs. I told my friend about it, and she uses it on her arms and said that it really helps!

KP is genetic and permanent. You can sometimes lessen the appearance/severity but it won't ever go away. Personally I don't have the energy/time for treating it so I gave up. It's photoshopped out of my wedding pictures. You have to be very consistent and persistent. You miss some "treatment" and it will come right back. I've also eaten paleo with no effect. Different people find different things help them individually though. KP Duty might work for one person and not another (it was the only thing that made the most minor difference for me) and paleo may work for someone else and not another.
