KWR: Baptism gift?

Maria, on October 8, 2017 at 2:22 PM Posted in Married Life 0 24

We've just been invited to a Catholic baptism for a baby girl in New Jersey. We plan on going. They're FH's relatives and I haven't met them yet. Since they're family they have been invited to our wedding so I'm excited to get to know them.

I've actually never been invited to a baptism as an adult. Is a monetary gift standard or no? Like at a wedding? We received a paper invitation with a request to rsvp. I'm totally ready to give money but am asking just in case a monetary gift is unusual or inappropriate?

What would you give? How much?

Thanks!

Yes, so frustrating! I just had a tech tantrum. This obviously wasn't intentional. Hid the other threads.

In my family, gifts (if given) are small and religious. There are Catholic web stores with appropriate gifts as well as Amazon. You could get a cross necklace, a children's book of prayers, a children's bible. Those are just a few ideas.

A monetary gift is what is appropriate. Especially in the northeast. It used to be savings bonds but now that they don't pay as well, cash is the norm. Usually only the godparents give something other than money.

We got a few monetary gifts for our sons' baptisms and just put them in their savings accounts. They also got a few religious themed gifts like a Noah's Ark piggy bank and a children's Bible. Anything like that would be fine, though I would have been ok if they had just been given nice cards with something written in them so that I could save them for when they are older.

When my goddaughters were baptized, I put 300 each directly into their college funds, a stuffed toy lamb that had their names and the date on the ribbon tied around its neck, a childrens bible, and a couple of other small books that wasnt religion related. Of course I probably went overboard but those girls are my world.

I went to one recently and gave a small, religious gift (a cross with a poem to hang by the crib) and cash.

My grandmother bought my daughter a bank bond (as she did with all holiday and special occasions) and a special, very nice cross.

Catholic in NJ here! Totally normal to give money. In my experience only close relatives would give the baby jewelry or personalized/religious gifts. Checks or bonds or something related is totally expected.

Savings bonds or money for their college fund is appropriate. I usually give $100.

I got my niece a custom pillow with her name, her parents names, date of birth, hometown and measurements. It was really cute and my sister liked it a lot. I got a deal on Groupon for it.

They actually make wooden carved blocks that have the traditional catholic prayers carved in to each side, kind of like a dice. Those are pretty neat. Baptisms can be a religious gift for the child or just a regular gift. We are catholic and usually it's a gift somewhat directed towards religion. Or a nice card with $20 would suffice as well.

As a Catholic, I can tell you that baptismal gifts, whether material or financial, are equally appreciated.

For something like this, I'd find a religious medal, made of precious metal, for the infant. Otherwise, $100 in a card should be fine.

Money is fine and surely it does not have to be a $100? Savings bonds cannot be bought without the child's SSN, no? Same with college fund - more paperwork, etc.

Super easy to find a little religious gift if you like. I took all the cash Son1 rec'd and put it into a mutual fund and gave it to him when he graduated from college. He loved it!

Money is great. Any precious moments, children's bible, willow tree, personalized blanket. Think keepsake type gift. $50 is what I would give for a baptism

The last baptism I went to I got a picture frame for baptism pictures. Check out local religious stores or your local hallmark! They sell baptism gifts, mainly frames and crosses. I know some people give money to put in a baby's savings account too. Whatever works for you!
