KWR - Changing your name on your resume?

Annie Adams, on May 23, 2013 at 8:04 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 10

Work sucks and Im looking to move on from this company. But my DH brought up a good point. If I use my legal name & the concidering company calls my references, some of my old managers and coworkers might not recognize it.

Is it proper - or effectiive - to make a note on the bottom of the resume that says: "My name until April 2013 was Annie B, so references may not recognize the name Annie A." ?????

What would you do?

Umm no, do not put a blurb like that, that would look very odd. Any person you are using as a reference should know you are now Annie A, you can always call them just to make sure...

I agree.. you should be telling your reference you are using them-- thus they should know your new name.

I'm in that situation now.. I had an interview Monday and I used three references and two of them doesn't know I got married.. I just called them and told them that my last name changed and that I'm using them as a reference. It shouldn't be a big deal. Good luck..

I am looking now. Most companies ask for maiden names.

I had a friend who put her maiden name in parenthesis at the top of her resume for a short while after getting married. So the top looked like this: Mary (Smith) Jones. It seemed to make a smoother transition for her.

The correct way to do this is to put your former last name in parenthesis between your first and last name like Kristnb suggest. Or to write "formerly Mary smith" directly under your current name.

Sigh, that's why I'm making my maiden name my middle name and it will all be on my resume. I will be looking for a new job in January.

I wouldn't imply I'm married on a resume. Married women have husbands and potentially children who detract from the time you can devote to your job (so 1950s, but it's still discrimination that pervades business in 2013).

    This is a good question.

I get references should know your new last name. But past employers wont know. They probably only call the last one anyway and in that case they should know your new last name.
