KWR: Cricut - worth it or no?

SPF, on March 16, 2017 at 4:50 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 32

I'm thinking about investing in a Cricut machine so I can make my save the dates and invitations. I wouldn't even know which one to get, nevertheless how to use it, but it's definitely something I've been looking into. Of course I'd have to watch tutorials and practice. I'm pretty handy with DIY projects so I could probably get the hang of it.

Does anyone have one and use it regularly? Is it worth it for the price? Are they relatively easy to use?

My sis has one but she's a photographer and used it a lot for her clients. She made my best friend's invites. Wish she'd make mine but I'm too OCD and she's too busy. Lol.

I have a different brand (Silhouette Cameo 3) and I liked that there were third party accessories that were cheaper for things like holding a pen. I'm still practicing using it, but it will be doing the calligraphy on my invite addresses. I've been practicing cutting cardstock for the invites by making paper flowers. I might also use it to personalize glasses or shirts for my bridesmaids or making tags for our favors.

I have the Silhouette Cameo 3 and LOVE it! It's worth it if you are going to use it for non-wedding things as well, but I couldn't justify buying it and learning how to use it just to make wedding invites. For the SIlhouette, there's some great tutorials and blogs to help you learn. I'm sure there are some for Cricut, too.

Okay so dumb question - but how does it work?! Like it prints right? Or does it just cut paper?

Like Kelsey, I have the competitor's version, the Silhouette Cameo. I didn't buy it specifically for my wedding, but because I like paper crafts. Even having it on hand this whole time, I never once used it for a wedding related purpose. I thought about using it for envelope addressing, but I decided to do the calligraphy by hand.

Both the Cricut and Cameo have the main purpose of cutting a variety of materials (not just paper), but you can make it draw if you replace the blade with an adapter and a pen.

I have a cricut and I Love it! However, I use it for way more than just wedding projects. If you aren't a big crafter and don't plan to use it after the wedding, it's not worth the investment. If you're willing to learn though, it definitely is. I spent many days/hours watching YouTube videos and reading advice to really understand how to make the things I wanted to. It's easy once you get the hang of it, but there is definitely a learning curve. You also need an Internet connection as the design software is on the Internet, and you need to actually design whatever it is you want to make outside of the preset projects you can purchase. It's a money pit as well, I'm addicted and spend so much on craft supplies now!

I've never heard of it until WW! It's so up my alley. That sounds awesome. I want to figure out what I'll need to use it and make STDs so I can order it!

@FutureMrs I can't go into Michaels unless I set a budget for myself so I feel ya! I'd definitely use it after the wedding. I love love love things like this! plus cutting by hand sucks.

I know I asked for mine as a Christmas present and since my parents didn't know what they were looking at, they had me order it for them. Silhouette had an amazing Black Friday deal a couple years ago. I'm sure both companies have periods where it's more economical to order, so I'd encourage you to do research on both machines and wait until you see a good sale for the one you want.

You could check Craigslist to get an idea of resale value and would have the option to resell it afterwards. I'm lucky in that I know someone has one so I borrow it from her whenever I need it.

Something I used it for that's a little more out of the box is to create stencils. You could use it to cut vinyl and then use the surrounding vinyl to stick a stencil. I used it for my table numbers and then will probably use it for my bar menu. The table numbers:
