KWR: Finger Tattoos

Lara, on August 11, 2015 at 12:28 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 30

I know this may be a long shot, but do any of you ladies have tattoos on your fingers? H and I have always talked about getting ring finger tattoos, and are planning to do so this weekend. If you have tattoos on your hands/fingers, can you tell me about the pain level, maintenance, etc? H has never been inked, so he has no idea what to expect. And I'd love pictures if you have them.

Thanks!

I don't have any finger tattoos, but I'm considering adding one to my collection of five other tattoos. I'm curious about the responses to this as well!

I don't have one. But my coworker has one. She doesn't have it in the same spot as a ring would be. They got matching 4 leaf clovers on side of their ring fingers. After 5 years, it's extremely faded and you can barely see it. She said if you use your hands a lot, it's hit or miss if it will last well.

This isn't from personal experience and she may have just had a bad artist do it? I don't know!

I don't have any finger tattoos (I do have other tattoos), but with such a small area it wouldn't take long. Also tattoos on hands may fade faster due to that fact that we use our hands constantly.

I got this 4 years ago- this pic was right after. The artist wasn't a huge fan of doing a finger- but he did it.

Second pic: I still love it- but it is a good deal faded now. Just needs some retouching as the letters aren't as connected as before.

ETA: Pain level was high.. but i'm a baby. Did not take long at all- but since you don't have much meat on your finger, it did hurt!

Some artists aren't fans also because your hand is more likely to have bacteria. After it's done you have to be super careful as it heals - not to rub it, etc. And you have to keep it clean and moisturized. Finally, you won't be able to wear a ring for several weeks.

I don't have a finger one, but I currently have a fresh one (5 days old) on my wrist.

Pain - might be high since it's over bone. But it only hurts during - and the artist will stop to wipe blood off, so you can breathe better then!

Two of my friends did, She got a lock, and he got a key.

I've heard that they fade really badly, especially on the underside if you get something that wraps around.

Another friend and her now exhubby got barbed wire "rings". She said it didn't hurt, and it hasn't faded, and I've known her for 6 years...she's had it longer than that.

    Smiley laugh

My FH is getting one because he doesn't think that he will wear his ring very much because of work (i actually didn't mind if he wore it or not, the tattoo was his idea). now i want to get a coordinating one with him after the wedding. here are some of my favorite ones, but i also don't want it to take away from my rings. But they will take more upkeep compared to other areas so i am considering a wrist tattoo also.

eta: apparently my SIL and her husband got their wedding date tattooed on the inside of their fingers before they were even married... that just feels like bad juju to me.

@Lara it's probably a good thing because it's so addictive, not just wedding stuff but very random stuff that you didn't even know you would have an interest in looking at lol

I went in to my tattoo artist and they didn't recommend it. You pay a lot and it will fade just as any other tattoo exposed to the elements. Especially on the inside of your finger.

I have not gotten any finger ones but a few friends of mine have them. They said it was a bit painful around the sides of the finger but not much worse than any of their other tats. One of my friends has had hers for 6 years and could use a touch up but it's not bad.

A friend of mine is heavily tattooed and uses her hands a LOT. She got stick and poke tattoos on the inside and outside of her fingers and they look amazing. This method will make the tattoo last longer (if done by someone who knows what they're doing) but will hurt like a mother and a half.

One of my friends and her ex husband got their fingers tattooed 15 years ago. She got a little diamond with little lines making it look like it's shining. 9 years later he leaves her for another woman he got pregnant with twins. Now the diamond looks more like a stone and it's all faded and blurry. She's looking into getting it removed. Tattoos hurt. They all hurt no matter where you get it done. I have quite a few and so does FH. I would NEVER think about getting rings tattooed on our fingers. I am a completely different person than I was 10 years ago. So was FH. Although we'd like to say that we will stay together forever, sometimes people make bad decisions. That's something you just can't predict..... Yea I know.... I'm a Debbie Downer LOL

Alexis, not at all! That's sort of why I asked. What we want to get are two different Arabic words, but I just don't think it's going to work because they aren't simple and they'll probably end up looking like shit based on what y'all have said. Thanks!

Asked tattoo artist friend of mine and he said, and I quote, "Ring tattoos last longer than some marriages, but not much more than."

MY FH got one shortly after we resized my e-ring (I know, I know it sounds like an awful idea but he was so set on having one and wanted us both to have e-rings, I couldn't say no to that and even warned him people will say it's a bad idea). He has a few tattoos, even one on his ribs, and he said the pain was so bad. The artist didn't go all the way around because that part fades especially fast. It's only been about a month, so I don't know quite how quickly they fade, but we are expecting to retouch it once in awhile. I don't know about anyone else, but his looked really bad for like a week, he constantly cleans his hands, but it probably doesn't help that he's a train mechanic so his hands get real dirty at work.
