KWR: How do you store your (wedding) photos?

Princess Consuela, on August 19, 2016 at 9:33 AM Posted in Married Life 0 14

With technology always changing, what's the best way to permanently store photos? I've been keeping things in my iCloud, but just learned that it's not permanent storage. I have a lot on Facebook and Shutterfly, but I don't know...that just doesn't seem like the best way to do it. I also know there are USB drives and external hard drives, but again, seems like with the way technology changes those won't work say, 10-20 years down the road.

Is the most surefire way to just get a hard copy album made and hope for the best? Help!

I have learned the hard way to store things in multiple places. My wedding pictures will be on a cd, external hard drive, and some sort of cloud.

I have mine all over the place. A shuterfly book, prints, a traditional album, a USB, a CD, a DVD sideshow, Facebook, and a scrapbook in the works

I store my pictures on a thumb drive and an external hard drive. For important ones, like our engagement pictures, I have them on multiple thumb drives.

I plan on some type of cloud based storage, a CD, and also putting them on my external hard drive.

Sounds like what I expected then - no good one stop shop for storage! Well, off to invest in some thumb drives and external hard drive! Thanks!

I have a box of photos in my closet plus an album. At some point, I'll probably scan the photos and save them to the cloud/external drive. I would guess if the technology changes, this will be a common problem and there will be a way to convert the media (like there is now for VHS tapes).

I have mine on 2 hard drives (work and home...and probably at my mom's too, actually), a USB drive, Facebook, Shutterfly....and I have hard copies in an album.

Our pictures are on my laptop, DH's computer, online (Facebook) and a USB drive (which is in our lock box here at home along with our important papers). I saved our honeymoon pictures on the USB drive as well.

Mine came from the photographer on a cd. I also made a copy onto my hard drive. I also ordered some today to be printed! So excited! Can't wait till they come in!

That's the reason that almost all of my couples get albums. That never gets obsolete, never crashes, changes format, etc. and you have tangible goods to finish telling the story. Which is what you paid the photographer to do.

With digital media, redundancy is your friend. I give my clients USB drives, since many don't have disc drives on their computers anymore....USB technology will probably be relevant for another 5-10 years. I keep backups at the bank safe box on multiple hard drives, as well as a desktop thunderbolt drive. As technology changes, I'll transfer it. For couples, I recommend keeping a western digital hard drive at home and in another offsite safe place. Those and other important photos, next format change it over, keep it a habit and care about it, and it won't be lost. Explore the drive periodically, keep it exercised and that reduces chances of failure.

Its been a long time for me but do people still use photobucket? I used to store all my pics on there. Havent logged in in forever but they are probably still there. Fh uses a lot of external hard drives as hes a picture taking beast. For now anyway....

I have an external hard drive that I periodically transfer all my photos to and I keep the drive in a water/fireproof safe box.
