KWR: My grandmother has turned me into a superstitious nutcase!

ValZtoB, on July 10, 2014 at 9:21 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 7

My beloved grandmother was a tiny little Italian immigrant spitfire. I miss her terribly. She could come up with a "bad luck" scenario to everything and OMG I have become the same way! The thought of a First Look makes me gasp. I see these beautiful cake tops that are "Mr. and Mrs. ____________ " and I can just hear her saying it is bad luck to use your name before the wedding. I have not tried on the wedding ring since we bought it because.....yup...BAD LUCK! I know it is silly, but it also makes me smile to feel the impact she has made on my life.....even if it is a little batty. I wish she could be here.

Have a nice day everyone!

Now I'm thinking of little superstition snippets you could put on the tables... I don't know why, it makes me chuckle.

It's true -- we do turn into our mothers and our grandmothers! I can't believe it when I hear their words coming out of MY mouth!!!

My mom & I were laughing on Sunday about her mom's response to any problem -- "Oh, well, worse things than that have happened today!"

Both of my grandmothers passed away within two months of each other 3 months before I got engaged so I've never heard their take on bad luck superstitions. However, I am totally my grandma on my father's side's twin and always have been. I also have the tact, or lack there of, of my grandma on my mother's side lol!

Here are the Greek ones I know about:

    1) No trying on wedding dresses before being engaged otherwise you will never get married.

    2) Odd number in the bridal party, jordanian almonds in the favors (odd numbers cannot be divided).

    3) When going around the table (during the service), who ever steps on the other person's foot first is the boss in the relationship.

    4) Give the blessed Jordanian almonds to a single person to put under their pillow and they will dream about their future spouse.

That's really sweet! We will probably not have any grandparents at our wedding, and even though I wasn't ever super close with mine, it makes me sad. All of our grandmas have passed, my remaining grandpa is dying and most likely won't make it til the wedding, FH's grandpas are still both alive, but one is quite old now and doesn't travel, and the other lives on the east coast of Canada. It will seem really strange to be at a wedding without any grandparents. I do have two elderly aunts though, that are little firecrackers, so I really hope they will be able to make it.
