KWR: Sam's Club Membership Question....

BringOnMay!, on April 8, 2015 at 8:56 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 12

We purchased a lot of our candy buffet items at Sam's club. The membership is in my moms name, and I am going back this weekend without her for a couple more things. (2 hr drive) How strict are they on self checks? I know it's against the rules to use someone else's membership, but it's just for 4 things! If they won't let me, how much is the upcharge, 10%?

When I worked at Sam's club if it wasn't your card they would either give you a warning and let you use it this one time or turn you away. I never heard of an uncharge. Just use self check out then they won't know.

I've never tried it and this is a CostCo reference, but anytime I've gone with my MOH/FMIL they barely even looked at the card before letting us in, and I felt pretty confident that I could have just walked in and it never would have been a problem.

The only thing I'd be slightly worried about is the picture popping up on the register at the end, so self check out will probably be best option. However, at any Sam's Club/Costco I've been to..there were no self check outs. So if you know yours has one, I think you'd be fine.

Your mom should get 2 cards with her membership. Can she just add you to the second one?

Pay with cash. They may compare the name on your cc with the name on the membership unless you go to self check.

Edit: At Costco they are strict, won't let you buy anything if your cc does not match the membership card. BJs doesn't seem to care; I use my fiance's membership card all the time. I don't know about Sam's Club, but I did some research for bulk flowers and I think there is a 10% upcharge for non members.

Last time we went we borrowed a friends card, and it was the first time that they told us we could not use it. My mom had to purchase a membership and they told her she only gets one card per membership. (Which is crap IMO, especially for married couples!)

I noticed the self checks and wondered if they still had to have the cashier come over and check your membership. (Theirs have photos on the card) I guess I'll give it a shot Saturday!

    Thanks ladies!

At least here, you can only use the self check out if you have their credit card so make sure your mom loans you that too. I don't know about an upcharge; I think you wouldn't be able to buy anything at all if they knew you weren't really a member.

They definitely lied about membership when you sign up you get two cards one for you and one for whoever else you choose. So glad I don't work there anymore lol

We went in a month ago and I had printed a day pass (which yes has an extra 10% fee on it), but they were offering a trial membership during that time for 60 days that took the 10% away. Worse comes the worse you can just go and get a day pass

At Costco they only allow 2 cards per an account. I carry my mom's card with me all the time and use it to purchase gas. I've never had a problem purchasing gas but I have never tried to go inside and make purchases.

Sidenote - They definitely lied about the cards, you get two. My best friend has a Sam's membership and she has one for her plus an additional she gave to he sister. Her sister just had to go with her to get a picture put on the card.

I think you will be fine. I've never had anyone check my id at the self checkout. I use whatever cc I want at mine. Sometimes I swipe my membership and then FH pays for it with one of his cards. Also unless your club is different you are allowed a "spouse" card with the membership. Me and my sister shared a membership for years. Now me and FH share a membership!

Tell your Mom to go back. That was the wrong information. They probably was trying to get both of you to get a membership. You get two cards for each membership at no extra charge.

They definitely gave her wrong info. We just signed up and I got the main card and DH got the added card. However, I really think the checking card thing varies store to store because I used my moms card for like 6 months and no one ever noticed.
