LA Flower District / DIY floral arrangements

Kayla, on May 13, 2013 at 10:25 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 11

Has anyone done this before or used LAFD? I'm willing to handle my own flowers to keep costs low just wondering if anybody has done this as well?

Also if buying flowers would you suggest the day before or two days before the wedding?

LAFD is awesome. I suggest doing it the day before, unless you have a fridge you can keep the flowers in to keep them fresh.

I have been in several weddings where the brides purchased all of their flowers from the Los Angeles Flower District. The church where they had their ceremonies allowed them to keep the flowers in the refrigerator, so we did the arrangements (for the ceremony and reception) and all the bouquets and boutonnieres before the rehearsal dinner. If you are planning to do this, make sure you have reliable help.

We are considering this for the bridal bouquets and boutonnieres. The church is allowing us to use the refrigerator over night.

We have done this for some family parties. The last one was for my grandma's 80th birthday this last Saturday. I am also planning to do this for the wedding. (my bouquet and ceremony/reception flowers)

We usually get them the day before. Like @ForeverMyLove said though, make sure you have help.

The issue is not so much the flowers... the issue is the transport, the preparation, the setup... having all the stuff to put it together...

It sounds like a whole lot of extra work and added stress when you should be enjoying your day.

If you have the ability, the willingness to work incessantly... then go ahead.

Hi everyone!!!! I considered doing my own floral arrangements, (as we are planning our wedding ourselves), However we figured its better to pay someon else to do the floral arrangements. I recently coordinated my own 30th bday bash and did all my own floral arrangements. We do have a day of event planner and mC provided to us by the venue free of charge, but we are leaving 3 hours after the end of our reception to airport for our honeymoon so it would be a hassle packing up all the arrangements after the wedding. BUT....we haven;t totally ruled anything out. I def don't want the stress of worrying about the prep work before and take down after the wedding. Smiley sad But hats off to those who can decorate their own wedding. AWESOME!! I wish I cud

I've done florals for 2 other weddings I've been in. It's time consuming, so make sure you allow at least 4 hours with help from parents, bridesmaids, FH, and anyone else willing to lend a hand. We will be going to the flower district for ours. We've never been before, so we're going to take a trip there once before the wedding to get the layout of the place so that we know exactly which vendors we want to hit. Our wedding is a Friday, so we will either be going early Wednesday or Thursday morning. Make sure you bring buckets of water with you so that the flowers don't die on the way back.

I'm excited to maybe do a walk through this November and get an idea of what we want. We only have 5 tables to decorate and only two girls in the wedding party so I'm up for the challenge

Unless you have specific reasons for not doing them, don't forget you'll need boutonnieres for the groom, his groomsmen, your fathers (and any other men you want to highlight such as grandfathers). You'll also need corsages for the mothers (as well as other women such as grandmothers). Most weddings I've been to, the officiant also gets a corsage/boutonniere (depending on gender). Also, think about whether or not you want flowers at the ceremony location.

Doing flowers can be a pain, but it can be fun too. There are plenty of good youtube videos as well. Good luck!

I plan to do flowers in mason jars and have them hanging from the aisle chairs at the ceremony, then using those same arrangements for the tables at the reception, along with votive candles. This will save time, work and money for us.

We are doing a backyard reception though, so no need for us to have giant extravagant centerpieces.

I think it would be a good idea to do a trial of the arrangements you are planning to do, just to make sure you know exactly what you need and how much.

    Good Luck!

Don't put flowers in a regular refrigerator! If it is set too cold, your flowers will freeze. If there is other food in there (like fruits or veggies), the off-gassing will wilt the flowers.

    Best wishes!

I have and am buying my own flowers the day before the wedding. I am getting FH to help me load up all the flowers and take them to my mom's friend's house. She will be putting together the flowers for me. I'm not sure if you already know where you're going to go or what kind of flowers you want but I will be using Andy's Flowers, which is on 8th street. The lady is super sweet and is giving me a great deal on roses, 2 dozen(any color roses) for $11.99! I also bought my vases near there for a sweet deal!

I plan on helping my mom's friend clean up the flowers the night before and my aunt who lives 4 hours away and works at a flower shop will also be helping out. I am sure we can get all the flowers cleaned and 18 flower arrangements and 7 bouquets done in no time.
