Lab Diamonds

TealWedding, on June 26, 2017 at 8:28 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 32

If you have a lab created diamond can you tell me why you or your fiance/husband decided to go that route? Thanks!

I wanted to!! But it's out of budget as of right now. For our 5 year anniversary we will be doing a lab diamond.

Ask your local jewellers for advice. They often have a better insight and can recommend certain labs.

He got lab created diamond because that's the only kind I wanted. It's the only way I know for sure it's conflict free diamond.

I have a lab diamond because it's flawless and we know for a fact it isn't a blood diamond. It's the only kind of diamond I wanted.

We've been looking at lab created yellow sapphire, I do absolutely love the natural yellow sapphire colors a bit more. Smiley smile I've read a few articles I could post if interested.

The diamonds in my ring aren't lab created, but the sapphires are. I also have a couple of other lab sapphire jewelry pieces FH has given me.

All of my jewelry has small pieces (no large stones), so lab created was cheaper. Plus FH's background is in science and he spent a few years in labs (not making this stuff, but it still kind of "ties in" with our relationship because of that!).

Yea I have a lab created moissanite, completely colorless with no flaws and as other PPs stated, I wanted to make sure it was conflict free.

I just learned about these today and I couldn't imagine why someone would want one. Just curious about why someone would choose it, thanks for the responses!

@Teal a lot of people choose lab created because of the issue with conflict diamonds and the devastation they cause.

A lab created diamond isn't the only way to get a conflict free stone.

I guess I just can't imagine why you would spend all that money on something that is bad for the environment and has absolutely no value.

You own a car don't you? It's bad for the environment and depreciates in value.

Well yes but if I wanted to I could sell it right now for $10,000. When you buy a lab diamond it doesn't depreciate in value, it has no value. No one jeweler would buy a lab diamond. And my diamond ring will only increase in value over time. I guess when I read about it I didn't actually think people bought them. Sorry, not trying to stir the pot I was just curious if people actually bought them.

I think you are misinformed if you think your ring is truly worth what you paid for it. If you try reselling it you will only get a fraction of the price you paid.

FH proposed with my grandmother's ring, but if he hadn't done that we would have gotten a lab-created diamond. It's definitely conflict-free, which is really important to us.

My point is that value isn't always what's important. Your car depreciates, but you still have one. It's convenient to have and it's probably the car that YOU wanted (you being the key word).

Nobody said that they chose lab created gemstones because they appreciate or are valuable to begin with. Some people want a pretty ring without the price tag of a natural diamond. Some don't want to buy into what they feel is a scam set forth by the diamond industry. Some people don't want to run the risk of having a ring that was created by barbaric practices that result in children losing limbs.

It's a CHOICE that you really have no right to judge. This is coming from someone who has a natural diamond ring and thoroughly regrets even wanting one.

I don't like diamonds, I've always loved sapphires, and emeralds. FH has been researching best options lab created vs natural.

This article helped me to understand the differences. Smiley smile

@Jennifer, I have had my ring appraised and insured so I know exactly how much it's worth, what it's resale value is etc. My FH and I looked at my ring as an investment. Obviously a beautiful investment, but still. I hope to pass my ring down to my daughter, granddaughter, great granddaughter, and if for some reason a family member was in a situation where they needed money I would hope my ring would be sold for a lot of money. Compared to someone bringing in a lab diamond to a dealer in 100 years from now and they'd take basically nothing for it.

@FB99 If it's about the meaning behind it why not get a nice piece of costume jewelry for a fraction of a lab diamond? To me they seem overpriced and all marketing.

Almost all diamonds are terrible investments unless you buy a huge flawless crown jewel quality stone. All the value we attach to them are pretty subjective so suggesting that our natural diamonds are somehow a smarter investment or a more meaningful stone is so pointless. I have a natural diamond engagement ring and I wouldn't change it for the world but not because of the origin of the stone but because of the man who put it on my finger. Sorry Teal, but you're falling hook line and sinker for advertising by the diamond industry if you think your diamond was a great financial investment

My ring is appraised too. If I lose it or it gets stolen then yes, insurance will pay out the appraised value that it is insured for. But if I take it into a jeweler or try to resell there is no way I'd ever get $20k for it so no, it cannot be considered an investment.

Insurance appraisals are typically much higher than what a jeweler is ever willing to pay you for it. In fact, I bet if you walked back to the store, they wouldn't even pay you wholesale
