Labor Day weekend wedding?!?

Laura, on January 29, 2021 at 11:10 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 11
We booked our venue for September 3rd, 2022 but now I am having second thoughts as I realized after, that is Labor Day weekend! Most of our guests (38–mostly all family-just a couple households and a few friends) are traveling 1-2 hours to the venue itself the Friday night before the Saturday wedding (as my parents are providing rooms from their timeshare for them to stay in for the weekend). I see the pro in that they will have an extra day to recoop and a 3 day weekend in one of our favorite small towns ever BUT I also see the issue of traffic/crowds and maybe higher hotel prices for our friends?

Haven’t signed a contract yet but have my date held. Should I contact the venue to see if I can change it to September 10, 2022 or keep September 3rd?

Get the prices from the hotels before you make your decision. There’s going to be a lot of couples that rescheduled from ‘21 to ‘22 so don’t take too long.

    Labor Day weekend wedding?!? 1
This is just one of the hotels. It only allows us to view this year—these are the prices for the month of September. It is actually higher for the weekend after Labor Day, so I guess I will have to call and find out how their pricing goes on Labor Day weekend since it doesn’t state a price.

Keep it for the holiday weekend!! Personally, I LOVE going to wedding over a holiday weekend, I have an extra day off, there’s an open bar, I get to see family and friends, and the best part: watch two friends get married! Unless you were planning on getting married on actual Labor Day, you have nothing to worry about! Just send your save the date a little earlier so guests have an extra heads up!

Okay thank you!!! Yay! I’m glad I got a guests viewpoint! And a positive one at that! Nope, we would do it the Saturday before. Those were my original thoughts too—- I was just so worried about how our friends would feel about it. I’ve called around and hotel prices seem to be $20 more expensive on that weekend (and they are always booked every weekend as is) BUT our friends all get Labor Day off so they can spend that Monday wine tasting or going to breweries or shopping or listening to live music if they chose to stay an extra night. It’s a small, lively town with A LOT to do, and one of our favorites, so we would love for our friends to enjoy it as well. Thank you again for your advice!

I agree with Jennifer! It sounds like a wonderful time! And as a guest, if it's just $20-ish more expensive for the hotel, I would much prefer to celebrate a wedding over a holiday weekend (and have super fun plans for the holiday weekend!) than on a normal weekend, when I may have to rush home on Sunday to prepare for the week ahead. It sounds like you're being super considerate of others' needs, which is a really wonderful quality in people. Go for it!! I hope your planning and your wedding both go wonderfully!

If your out of town guests are driving, then labor day weekend should be fine. If they're flying, then I'd take into account that airfare is always more expensive on labor day weekend. But I wouldn't worry about it if they'll be driving

When I was researching potential dates a few venues had higher prices for holiday weekends and a strict minimum guest count, that would really be my only concern with the holiday weekend.

I'm purposely booking for Labor Day Weekend! I'm just waiting for my venue to email me the contract but we're doing 9/2/2022, the Friday wedding really sold itself as our Venue offers 10% discount for Friday nights!

All of our guests are local, besides my future brother and sister in law, they are from FL and will have to travel regardless.

I figured if we did Labor Day weekend, it would give people some time to reocup before having to go back to work, and give me and my FH some time to destress before going back to work as he has limited PTO and now wont need to use a PTO day for Monday since work will already be closed.

We are planning on sending our Save the Dates a little earlier than normal since it is a Holiday Weekend, and with the vaccine rolling out, we're thinking life may go back to somewhat normal and people will be planning vacations after 2 years of no vacations so we want to get on everyone's calendars.

I would also keep in mind some of your guests may not be able to attend if they are not lucky enough to work 9-5 Monday thru Friday and some people have to work holidays.

I would be disappointed if someone was having a wedding over Labor Day weekend, because where I worked it was a blackout date and under no circumstances was I allowed to take a vacation or any time off around holidays. I would want to go but I don’t know if I’d be able to. Not that I’m attending your wedding but people who work in an office don’t always think about the schedules of those who work weekends.

Yes! Very good point! That’s definitely a consideration of mine. I work some weekends and holidays as a nurse and some of our friends do too. I’m hoping if I give them extra early notice they will be able to get it off.
