Lack of space and stuff for 'down the road'

Tiger Bride, on September 19, 2019 at 10:31 AM Posted in Registry 0 6

Hi again! We settled on where to register, now we're looking at what.

As fall/the holidays approach, I've been thinking more about this: I love decorating and I love hosting gatherings. It brings me absolute joy. My parents aren't into it as much as I am, so I fully expect and am looking forward to being the house that everyone goes to for winter holidays, the 4th of July, etc. As a result, I'd like to build up a collection of (and register for) some seasonal stuff - I'm talking rust-colored towels for the fall, red and evergreen for Christmas, etc. I imagine I'll also need stuff for a guest bedroom and bathroom as well (again, for 3-4 seasons - fall, Christmas, 'regular' (shades of blue for me), and a touch of red white and blue).

Here's the problem....I don't envision my 'final form' (LOL) being for another 3-4 years. We currently live in a fairly small 2BR, 1BA apartment (@700-ish sf) in my home state. We are planning to be here for a few years before moving back across the country to the place where we met/he's from. My parents plan to follow eventually. We won't buy a house until we move back.

But seeing as the wedding is the ONE chance to register for stuff....do I ask for things I won't be able to use for a few years, then move it all across the country? Where do I store it in the meantime?

Same deal with bedding - we have a full size bed. Do I ask for queen sheets, because we'll get one eventually? Do I ask for stuff for a guest bedroom we don't have yet? Tablecloths for a larger table than we have now?

Thanks!

We registered for items that we can't use at the moment, but will be able to use in our next home. I think this is pretty common since some couples don't live on their own at all before getting married. Can you store the extra items at your parents house?

If you were moving next year or so, I'd say register for it, but since its 3-4 years away and anything can happen in that time storing that stuff will be more of a pain!

By all means go for it though if it's what you really want! I'm the hosting house as well so I totally understand what you mean and how you feel! It's amazing! But that is a long time to have things you aren't using.

You could always register for the things you will use now, and then with the cash you get from the wedding just save it to buy what you will want in the future. That way you aren't storing a ton of stuff.

I also live in a small home (2bd 1ba) with my two little people and FH will be moving in next month. I'd go ahead and register. I've invested in big tubs where I put all my seasonal decor. I also like to host even in a tiny space. The biggest thing that has helped is cleaning out things I don't use already and trying not to hoard items. I'll go through at least once a month and clean out stuff that won't be used or is broken. That helps a lot to keep the clutter down so that I can still hold on to my seasonal items.

I don't see anything wrong with registering for nicer things for the future. I'd probably skip things like a $10 set of decorative towels, realistically you can buy these when you get your house and your house may change how you decorate. For example, our old house looked nice with red (it was a rental so we couldn't paint anything) so for Christmas we basically went all out with red. Our new house that we purchased looks nicer with golds & silvers, so our decor has a lot more of that. But I think registering for things like a $100+ pair of sheets for a king or queen bed (whatever you think you will buy), really nice towels, nice serving dishes for holiday dinners, etc. is totally fine!

I would register for the nice bed linens and maybe a couple things you’re going to use within the next year. Since you’re planning on moving, you really don’t know what your house will look like or what you will put in the rooms, so it would be hard to coordinate those things.

If you want holiday stuff, ask whoever is coordinating your shower if they can do a wishing well for holiday items. They could assign each guest a holiday (obviously they would repeat) and request they bring a small something for you to use that time of year. I’ve seen this done and it’s really neat to see all the different holiday stuff people get.
