I come from a very large family which ends up with us expecting around 450-475 guests when including friends. Our maximum budget is $15,000 with the majority of wedding costs being covered by my fiance and myself but both families willing to help out. So far, we are looking at photography, reception venue (including tent, chairs, tables, dance floor), food, dress, officiant, and wedding Mass venue totaling a little over $10,000 with other aspects such as DJ, invites, and decorations to go. We are getting married out of season at my Alma Mater, having friends and family pitch-in for the ceremony music and making desserts, my sister is designing the invites, DIY decorations, ferns that grow in our woods/seasonal flowers, and even buying my dress off of a site for pre-owned wedding dresses.

For all you brides on a budget and with possible experience planning for large weddings, do you have any helpful advice or tips you'd be willing to share?

400+ for buffet?? Yes, you are going to a need lot of buffet tables (and bars)!! How are you planning to set that up? Do you have an alcohol budget?

My budget is similar and I'm only having about 90 people. My food costs are actually about $25/person with two options for the main entree and in buffet style. I'm also having a cocktail hour and an open bar (not included in the meal cost)...but my rentals totally upped the budget. 40x40 tent, tables and chairs, linens, the list goes on and on. Your tent will have to be huge. Mine fits everyone and the extra tables (cake, buffet, head, etc) and a space floor comfortably. I can't imagine a tent cost for 475 people! Have you gotten that quote? I'm curious.

It sounds great in theory until people have to actually do the work. No one actually wants to bake dessert for 450 people for your wedding!

OP, how many buffet lines do you plan on having? I'm hoping about 10. Or more. Otherwise...

^ I'm thinking she needs 10 or more buffet set ups too, with servers to push people along

Honest question, what stops people from taking double their portion before he other half of your wedding is served?

If you manage to host 500 people for $15k, I'll be super impressed. That's ninja level budgeting. I am keeping costs down for my wedding by using a lot of free help from family and friends (sounds like you are doing the same). We are still on track to spend $63pp on the wedding. My youngest sister used disposable plates, plastic tablecloths, had a dry reception (no alcohol) and still ended up spending $40pp. I found some cool ideas from these websites:

    ETA - Good luck!

I am literally LOLing at work at these cats.

I think OP is over us.... But I really do hope the Nation Guard flies over this wedding and drops care packages for the guests... at least some cans of beans or rice to keep folks alive.....
