Laser Cut Guest Book Tree? Yay or nay?

Erin, on February 12, 2022 at 9:39 PM Posted in Planning 0 8

Looking for feedback from those who have gone with the alternative guest book of having a laser cut tree made with leaves that guests sign. I was going to go in the traditional direction, but I keep thinking about a book just being put on a shelf and rarely pulled out to look at. My hesitations about this though are:

1) I see these marketed on Etsy as great for rustic weddings. Mine will be in a city and the venue is a former restaurant converted into an event venue, so definitely not rustic. Will this look out of place in the setting? I know everyone says "it's your wedding, you get to do what you want" but at the same time, I don't want it to look super weird. We are doing our First Look under a famous huge oak tree at our getting-ready hotel though, so maybe this would fit with that?

2) Do most guests understand how to sign it without a wordy explanation? We are going to do a short and sweet sign that says "Please sign the guest book (or maybe we should say sign a leaf?) and take the Key To Your Seat". Surely people won't get confused and sign the background instead of a leaf, right?

3) Does this still look good afterwards with everyone's scribbles on it?

Would love to hear what your experience was if you did this and whether you still love it on your wall or if you wish you had done something else. Thanks!

I’d recommend going a cheaper route of doing a photo frame mat. I did that for my wedding and it was self explanatory for guests and looks very neat on my wall. You can find these at Target, Ross, Michaels, etc.

One of my friends purchased a similar tree and had her family and bridal party sign it at the rehearsal, so guests saw an example of where to sign, in addition to any directions/signage.

I used to work many weddings when I was younger as a guestbook attendant and the countless couples always had the traditional book from Hallmark with 50 pages for signatures. Even passing the book around the room, only 1/4 of the guests had any interest in signing. There were never any heartfelt messages, only signatures that filled half of the first page. For that reason, we decided to skip it and any alternatives. If you use the traditional book, most people can figure it out on their own. In our experiences seeing other types of guestbooks, no one knows what to do and there is no guestbook attendant to offer guidance because people don’t read signage.

Though I did like the idea of using a photo matte with a photo or invitation in the center. But there is no guarantee that everyone will sign. A modern alternative is a photo booth at the entrance.

This is what I was going to suggest! Have a few people sign leaves ahead of time, and everyone else should be able to figure it out from there. I would also still have a sign, and I would probably use the wording "Sign a leaf" instead of "Sign our guest book".

We did a thumbprint guest book, which is similar. We made a little sign explaining it, and had our wedding party sign it during the rehearsal so that there would already be examples for when the rest of the guests showed up. It turned out wonderful and is currently hanging on our wall for us to see every day. We felt the same about a traditional guestbook!Laser Cut Guest Book Tree? Yay or nay? 3

This a great idea, Samantha. I am planning on also having my family sign our alternate guestbook ahead of time.

Erin, in regards to your questions:
    1) I think it will look just fine for a non-rustic wedding. Since there is a big tree at your venue it will probably fit in fantastically.
    2) I am also worried about this! My wedding is in just 9 days so I can report back then.
    3) Some of the Etsy reviews have photos of signed boards. I think they still look good but, because of the price, I decided to get a paper print instead for my guests to sign. Laser Cut Guest Book Tree? Yay or nay? 5

This is a very cute idea. We had both a traditional book, that was supposed to include advice and Huge puzzle piece guest book that the guest were supposed to sign.
