Last name changes and covid

Chelsea, on February 25, 2021 at 1:07 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 7

I am getting married on March 7th, 2021. I am wondering how I would go about changing my last name with social security when all of their offices are closed? Can anyone who has run into this and found a solution please advise?

Thank you so much! Smiley smile

This is second hand advice --

My best friend got married last summer and just had to mail in everything to change her name. She did have some issues with this since there was a small delay, and they needed her documentation for their honeymoon.

You mail everything in and they will mail the originals back to you. I had my name changed last October. I included the application, my birth certificate, & my passport. I received my original documents back the following week and my new social security card almost 1/2-2 weeks later.

I mailed in my marriage certificate, passport, and form into my local SS office via certified mail. I received my documents back about 2-3 weeks later, also via certified mail. It took around another month for me to get my new SS card. Super painless process. The day I got my new card in the mail, I went to the DMV to change my DL as well. I think my name was updated everywhere within 2 or so months of getting married.

I just did this 3 weeks ago. I called SS. They told me what form to fill out, what documents to send with it, and where to send it. I have since received my documents back, however, still waiting on SS card. They are definitely open and processing.

I don't know what state you live in, but I was able to just mail the local Social Security office a forum (that I filled out) and a copy of the marriage certificate.
