Last Name

Monique, on July 13, 2019 at 1:28 PM Posted in Married Life 0 37
When you are married will you take your fs last name or will you be keeping your maiden name as part of your new name? What made you decide that? If you are already married what did you do? My situation is a little unique as my fh has two last names. His birth mom (who passed) and his adoptive dads last name. I want to keep mine (I am Hispanic and want to keep that part of my name as it is part of my heritage) I decided to take his adoptive dads name because there are other men in his family who have his moms name. His adoptive dad has no biological children of his own. I think if I was not to take that name that it would be so rude to the man who raised my fh as his own and is in every right his dad. We can continue his name. My decision was something I struggled with for a while with what name to take.

I'm keeping my name, I've always said I would and told my fiance that before we got engaged. My fiance is adopted and doesn't like his name, he's not really close with his family either, so he wanted to take mine.
My family has a large home and we all live together so for all of us to have the last name makes everything easier too.

I'm taking his last name. What I can't decide on is keeping my middle name as-is, or making my maiden name my middle name.

Oh awesome. I was going to put that as an option but changed my mind last minute. I haven’t heard of anyone doing it yet. That’s great!

It's pretty common in my family and where I grew up to take your maiden name as your middle name when you get married. But, my middle name is basically the female version of my fiancé's middle name, which I think is pretty cool haha

I’ve been debating this myself, but I think I will take my FH’s last name. He said he doesn’t care and it’s up to me, but our children have his name and it has bothered me that I don’t share a last name with them. I definitely don’t want to hyphenate because we both have long last names. What I am considering is using my maiden name for publishing my writing since my grandpa had all daughters and I’m the last in this branch of the family with his surname.

My husband and I are actually combining our last names to make a common last name. That way neither one of us is totally giving ours up!

That was part of my issues. If I took his moms name our future kids would have a different last name then my own.

I’m taking my FW’s last name, but for different reasons than most heterosexual couples. Since just a few years ago we couldn’t legally get married, it feels kind of like a right of passage to get married and share a name. I also think it will
help to have the outside world see us and our future children as a family unit instead of me and my children or her and her children.

I’m keeping my maiden name. My family has too much history and I respect them and my individuality too much to give that up just because I am getting married.

I kept mine! Too much professional stuff under mine. We’ve talked about creating a new name together (we both have tiny families and no kids). We may do that someday. 🌸

I’m hyphenating my last name. Too many accomplishments under my name. also, in my case it’s just easier to tack on honestly.

I am a teacher and I am not looking forward to changing everything lol. I can see how accomplishments would make things harder.
