Hi community.. I'm going through a nightmare with my name change here in FL. My husband is Puerto Rican where it is standard to be given both your mother and father's family name. Hi community.. I'm going through a nightmare with my name change here in FL. My husband is Puerto Rican where it is standard to be given both your mother and father's family name.

When I showed my certificate to the SSA, they had no issue in me taking only his father's last name (which is the name he mainly uses anyway.. But for all legal purposes he does have two separate last names, no hyphenation or anything). My trouble starts when I go to change my license.. They say they will not accept this change. The DMV says I must take both his last names rather than just his father's.

I'm being told I'll have to wait at the SSA and file to once again change my name to both last names rather than one so it can match my ID and social. I do not agree with this at all. I don't want both last names! It's customary here to use only one last name, why am I being forced to have two as well if SSA is fine with me only taking one of his?

Has any other bride experienced something similar?

Thanks, ladies.. I'm tempted to call the office that messed me over to complain but I don't see that actually doing much :/ I just don't get why this was so difficult in one office and a breeze in another.

Man, it's good to know that dmvs are exempt from the laws of the US everywhere. (Jk) No idea OP, but BUMP and good luck to you

I am from Puerto Rico and never heard of that problem before. Sorry they had you do all that and wasted your time.

Thanks ladies!! They are absolutely not consistent. Completely different experiences and these dmvs are located only 20 minutes apart.. But yea I'm happy I don't need to have two last names Smiley smile I was worried I really would have to go back and once again change my name with social security.

I’m having this issue as well. My husbands last name is hyphenated since he was born in PR. Our marriage license says that because it has to - no issues. DMV won’t let me get a new license with one name even though my new social shows the one last name. They say it has to match the marriage license which isn’t true. I don’t have to take both names.

I’m beyond frustrated and just need a new license. I’m in Florida as well.

    Suggestions ?

    Hi Ashleigh!

I’m so sorry you’re facing the same irritating predicament I did. Honestly, the best thing I did was try different DMVs; different people helping me. I hope you find someone willing to change your name as SS has accepted it. I don’t understand the DMV’s issue.

I went to 2-3 DMVs already. They all say since the marriage license has his legal name on if that’s the one I have to take. There’s some law they claim. I’m like no, there’s not. I’m going back out to try other DMVs Tuesday - I’m just running out of DMVs and just don’t understand why SS accepted it but the DMV is giving me a hard time with his legal name being on the marriage license.

Hey! It took me taking another day off and going to 2 more DMVs....so the 5th one was the charm. I walked in and out without a problem, and they went over all my documentation. I'm not sure why the other DMVs were being ridiculous, but they were. One even told me to have my husband change his name and then I could only take one - nope.

But I did get my new ID with my new name, so they shouldn't question me now.

Yay!! At least you got it! As far as the DMV’s, I don’t understand the inconsistency either. One DMV had the audacity to tell me the same, to just have my husband go and change his name. Seriously..? They were acting like I was pulling random names out of a hat.

I think people should feel comfortable with their own name and couples are getting creative with how they change their married names by making new ones combined, hyphenating etc., so why is literally taking one of two existing last names of your partner so difficult? I didn’t understand it especially since social security had no issue whatsoever. In America, it’s custom to use one last name. Why force both?

That same DMV kept telling me how “unlawful” it was to do this. So why did the next DMV I went to literally ask me how I wanted my name presented on my ID? It really was a headache but once again, I’m glad we both found our solutions. They’re our names and what we literally need to live with.

I didn’t understand it either. I was beyond frustrated and my husband wasn’t happy - he didn’t want me to take both names either. The part that upset me the most with documentation was the DMV telling me well your new name doesn’t match his signed here. The marriage license doesn’t dictate what last name you choose to have - once social approves if you’re supposed to be good to go.

The DMV telling me to have my husband change his name pushed me over the edge - he’s military, and that’s too much paperwork for her to just do her job. I did get in touch with a lawyer and they said that the DMV was allowed to do that because they operate off of state laws whereas SS is federal. However, federal overrules state so it didn’t make much sense to me.

We shouldn’t of had to go to several DMVs to get a new ID when SS was good to go. I’m glad I found this article, so I wasn’t the only one having this issue.

Can anyone please let me know which DMV they were able to change their last name at? I live in Miami and I am having the same issue of being expected to take both my husbands last names, which is ridiculous, and I’m not going to do. Two DMV’s down here told me we would have to pay over $400 to change my husbands’ name on our marriage certificate in order for me to change my last name to what I want. I already changed my name at the social security agency and they gave me no issues.
