Hi community.. I'm going through a nightmare with my name change here in FL. My husband is Puerto Rican where it is standard to be given both your mother and father's family name.

When I showed my certificate to the SSA, they had no issue in me taking only his father's last name (which is the name he mainly uses anyway.. But for all legal purposes he does have two separate last names, no hyphenation or anything). My trouble starts when I go to change my license.. They say they will not accept this change. The DMV says I must take both his last names rather than just his father's.

I'm being told I'll have to wait at the SSA and file to once again change my name to both last names rather than one so it can match my ID and social. I do not agree with this at all. I don't want both last names! It's customary here to use only one last name, why am I being forced to have two as well if SSA is fine with me only taking one of his?

Has any other bride experienced something similar?

It’s crazy how common this is. I got married almost two years ago and was told by the SSO in Sarasota that I had to take both my husbands last names and I did. My kids only have my husbands first last name and now I am having problems with having both his last names with some documents. We recently moved to Orlando, I wonder if it would be easier here going to the SSO or request the name change instead of going through court order because from what I understand, going through court order I have to pay 200-500 depending. This is so frustrating

I believe since it’s 2 years later, you’d have to have a court order. I think you can only change it once with the marriage license and you have a certain amount of time.

Hi All! I got married in Dec 2018 and am having the same issue. I am going to hyphenate my maiden name with his first last name. The SSO had no issue at all and the DMV wanted me to hyphenate mine with his two last names (3 last name!? uh no thanks lol). His last name is not hyphenated or anything and he does not go by his maternal last name at all. They told me to have him bring in a bank statement or something that shows he doesn't go by the other last name and they will change his name for me to change mine. I haven't tried another place yet (we bought and sold houses so I didn't want to mess with that) but I am happy to hear that other people are having some sort of success with different locations. I am going to another DMV soon and will keep you posted!

I am currently having the same exact issue! Have gone to a DMV in Hillsborough Co and another in Pasco Co. Same answers, I have to take both his last names because that’s how it is on every document. Ugh! Help!

Having the same issue up here in New Hampshire. The town office wouldn't let me take my husband's first last name, I had to legally take them both on the marriage license. Now I have to go back to probate court (in 1.5 months!) to petition to legally change my name just to take his paternal last name. What an awful process.

The same thing is happening to me. I’m Dominican and to take my husbands second last name would be an insult to my family since if I have 2 last names it should be 1 mine and 1 his, to take his mothers last name would be a serious faux-pas. I’m very upset since I will just have to keep my maiden name. Now I need to go back to the social security office to restore my original last name.

This just happened to me, as well. My husband is from Brazil and I was only to take his paternal surname. SSA had no problem issuing my new name with just the one last name, but when I got to the Florida DMV, they told me that because he has two last names listed on the marriage certificate and on his drivers license, that I must also have my name formatted this way. There are two things here that don't make any sense. 1) You must legally change your name with SSA before you change it with any other entity, which would lead me to believe that what is stated on the Social Security Card should stand as your legal name. 2) If one organization provides information that is contrary to what the other one states, this opens up the door for much confusion about what a person's real legal name is and could cause many problems when trying to prove identity.

The stranger thing... I told the DMV folks that I refuse to accept their answer that I cannot be issued a new license until going back to SSA and that is when they told me that if both last names cross-reference in SSA's database with only the one last name, that they would still be able to issue me a drivers license. They said that they would still have to put both names though, and that is exactly what they did. Afterward, they explained to me that if I go to Passport Authority, they may also be able to change my name to match that of my Social Security Card. If that occurs, I can then go back to the DMV and have my name changed to match the Social and the Passport as they only need 2 legal forms of ID to process a name change on your drivers license. It is the dumbest thing I have ever heard of.

I'm currently going through the same thing in Broward. Does anyone know a DMV that will be able to help me with this? My husband has 2 last names (not hyphenated) and I changed on the SS and they let me pick just one but I went to a DMV in Margate that said that I had to have the same name as the one in my marriage license and not SS

I found out that you can get your passport changed to just one last name. If you got your passport within 1 year that process is free too. After that you can bring your updated passport to the DMV and change your name using your passport since the problem is Florida and not the federal government. With your updated passport they don’t need any other name change documents to know what your husbands last name actually is (so don’t even bring your marriage certificate when you have your new passport). I found this out after leaving the DMV crying also and doing a lot of research, it was a terrible experience. I hope this helps you....

Well this round about it kinda a lot of work since you don’t have a passport but it’ll work if you want to do it.... You would have to first get your passport in your maiden name and pay the fee, and then reapply to change your name on your passport at no fee if done within 1 year, and then you would be able to change your drivers license. I’m sorry you have to go through this, I know it sucks. Good luck and I hope it works for you. I feel Florida should get a class action law suit for this, something that disproportionately affects Hispanics and women and something that is not federal law. It feels sexist and racist to me.

Here’s and update! I went to another location today. I was nauseous and shaking because I was so nervous I was going to get the same response from the previous location. Well, they did it!!! No issues, the lady was really nice and printed out my license with my husband’s first last name and my maiden name. ☺️ Don’t give up guys! Keep trying!!!

Hey Mariana! I’m going through this nightmare process right now. DMV does not want to issue me a new driver license because I need to have take on my husbands double last name but Social Security approved one of my husbands’ last name. Did you have to go to different DMVs and talk to a supervisor until someone approved one of the two last names ? This is just a ridiculous process which no one is helpful! Ughh
