Hi community.. I'm going through a nightmare with my name change here in FL. My husband is Puerto Rican where it is standard to be given both your mother and father's family name.

When I showed my certificate to the SSA, they had no issue in me taking only his father's last name (which is the name he mainly uses anyway.. But for all legal purposes he does have two separate last names, no hyphenation or anything). My trouble starts when I go to change my license.. They say they will not accept this change. The DMV says I must take both his last names rather than just his father's.

I'm being told I'll have to wait at the SSA and file to once again change my name to both last names rather than one so it can match my ID and social. I do not agree with this at all. I don't want both last names! It's customary here to use only one last name, why am I being forced to have two as well if SSA is fine with me only taking one of his?

Has any other bride experienced something similar?

I went to another DMV and didn’t mention anything about the issue at the previous DMV. I also didn’t ask to speak with the supervisor. I just acted like nothing was going on and let things flow. They issued my new drivers license with the name how I wanted it with no issues.

Hi I live in Fl. I’m not sure if I’m going through the same process. My husband has his mother’s last name first then his fathers but only uses his Fathers, I was asked what last name I wanted to use at SSI I then go to the dmv to be told they were wrong. I had to use his mothers last name which is stupid because our son has my Father in-laws last name Only.

That’s a very tricky situation. Is there anyway your husband can go to the social security office and change it. I’m thinking his birth certificate also has his mother’s last name first?

Has anyone gone with just their new SSI card and passport to the DMV to change it their last name ? I’m thinking maybe having two identifications they won’t ask to look at the marriage license? I have gone to two dmvs and they want me to add both my husbands last names...ughh they just need to match what SSI allows. What a nightmare and waste of time

    Hi Mariana!

I am a Puerto Rican woman who had two last names, not hyphenated or anything, the first was my fathers ad the second my mothers. I do not have a relationship with my father and do not have a middle name so my plan was to make my mom last name my middle and my husbands last name my own. When I went to get my license a few days before the wedding the clerk told me that I either took both names as my middle or none. I was honestly crushed at the thought of losing that link to my life pre-marriage, I also only had seconds to decide because these clerks are not patient and decided to simplify my name and take only my husbands. Perhaps thats what they mean but I don't see why it would matter if your marriage cert already got issued with the name you chose, why should you suffer because they overlooked something?

I tried not giving them the marriage license. Nope, didn’t work! They asked for it. You definitely need it.

Totally agree! I felt crushed when they gave me a hard time. I would say to make things easier for you, take your husbands last name followed by your mom’s last name. See if they are willing to do that.

If you have your passport updated with your new name then you don’t need your marriage certificate to change it in the DMV. I updated and changed my name on my passport first and just 2 days ago I was able to change my name since the US govt had no problem with giving me just 1 of his last names, it was only Florida that was trying to force me to take both.

I'll be celebrating my first year of marriage soon, at this point my name has been changed for a while. At the end of it all I am and will always be Me, no matter what my name is. I'll always come from where I came from and I'll always keep that part of me alive! I am Mrs. Amaya, lol beats having 3 last names! Although I am still getting used to hearing it because it just takes time to get used to.

    I’m having the same problem
In Orlando, Social Security has already changed it to the name I want. They said if I can get passport to change it they will accept my passport as my name change document (not marriage license). This is crazy

What did you provide the passport people. If I provide them my current driver license they will see have two last names. (My husbands). I have my marriage certificate and my original passport that expired many years ago.

I just read this, I am totally having the same issues with FL DMV. I was told i need to put both my husband two last name where i already have the ssa processed my paper with his last name not including his mom last name. she told me i need to have some kind of second document that he only use one last name not his mom. all i can think of is his utility bill that has only his one last name. she even said to me she was married to a hispanic and i asked her how did you change your last name, she said i put both. DUH not for my case. Maybe she is lying to me. i don't even think DMV is allowed to say that because it is how your last name suppose to be exactly on the social security to match your DL. DMV wants my last name to be like duke of cambridge with long last time. what the heck!!

this is ridiculous. hopefully the next dmv wont give me such a trouble. i have a crabby toddler who does not like to wait at DMV too long and i do not like to go back and forth.

i just looked at the FLDMV website

    it said

"Your name must verify with the Social Security electronic system to obtain a Florida driver license or identification card."

there you have it, they can suck it or ask for a supervisor!

I know this is old but I’m going through this now. I was told the same and they show you a piece of paper but you can’t have that paper nor is it’s stated or clear on the website. I requested a copy of the Florida law stating this rule and they could not provide it because there is none. I was told if I can get my passport with the name change then I could get my drivers license. I know it’s been a while but where did you go? Every DMV is a tax collectors office in my area and they make up their own rules. I’m really starting to feel it’s deliberately set up against Latino and Hispanic family. I do know a few people who have both names as myself but it is not a common practice in America.

I was told that is what I should do but I’m afraid the pass office now requires you to have a new drivers licenses first 🙄

I ended up having to get my Social Security card and passport first and use my passport at the DMV as the name change document instead of my marriage license. It took longer, but I was able to get my name changed the way I wanted to.

Hi! How did you do this??? I’m having the same issue. Did they not give you a hard time getting your passport without a photo ID with your married name? Please help!
