Hi community.. I'm going through a nightmare with my name change here in FL. My husband is Puerto Rican where it is standard to be given both your mother and father's family name. Hi community.. I'm going through a nightmare with my name change here in FL. My husband is Puerto Rican where it is standard to be given both your mother and father's family name.

When I showed my certificate to the SSA, they had no issue in me taking only his father's last name (which is the name he mainly uses anyway.. But for all legal purposes he does have two separate last names, no hyphenation or anything). My trouble starts when I go to change my license.. They say they will not accept this change. The DMV says I must take both his last names rather than just his father's.

I'm being told I'll have to wait at the SSA and file to once again change my name to both last names rather than one so it can match my ID and social. I do not agree with this at all. I don't want both last names! It's customary here to use only one last name, why am I being forced to have two as well if SSA is fine with me only taking one of his?

Has any other bride experienced something similar?

I had to send in my social security card with his last name on it as the document for the passport change. Then I used passport for DMV.
So had to do social security first, then passport, then drivers license.

So you didn’t show your marriage certificate when you went to get your passport? You SS served as “proof of name change”?
What about photo ID? They ask for photo ID so did you use your drivers license with your maiden name?

I already had a passport, so I did everything by mail with the application. I believe I sent the marriage license with new SS card with correct name and put on application the last name that matched social security card and had no issue.

OK cool. I’m at my second DMV for the day but if it doesn’t work, I’ll try it that way.

Just to confirm- When you went back to DMV with your passport, did they still ask for your marriage certificate? They didn’t give you issues though because your passport was already changed?

Use passport only as name change document once it is correct. I was told at the dmv that if I showed marriage license would have same problem again

Ok. I hope it works. DMV signs don’t list passports as an approved name change document. But lll try. Thanks for your reply.

I'm having the same issues... I called the passport customer service line and they told me if I send my passport request with my marriage certificate, I would need to take all my husbands last name. On your marriage certificate, did your husband use all his last names or just the one you wanted to change it to?

Many people said that making a new passport worked so I'm thinking of just going ahead and sending it anyways. The only downside is that the fee for passport is non refundable but at this point, that chance might be the best option.

I did not send my marriage license with my passport. I sent my Social Security card, I did that first. Yes, my husband used both his last names on our marriage license.

    Thanks for the help!

Did you complete the passport application online stating you needed to change your name?Because my passport is still valid so I had to pick the name change option due to marriage, in that case I think they would ask for the marriage certificate. I do have my SSN with the married name though which I was thinking of sending together, was just scared to send my actual SS card by mail.

Sorry for all the questions & thanks again
