Law School & Wedding Planning!!

Elyssa, on May 4, 2018 at 5:24 PM Posted in Planning 0 12

Hi all,

I was hoping anyone who has planned a wedding during 1L (or any other year) of law school could give me some advice! We are getting married July of my 1L summer and I am trying to figure out when to plan a bachelorette party, bridal shower, & honeymoon. Could use advice on when people think it's best to do these (especially the bach party), during spring break or May/June of 1L summer!

Thanks for the advice!!

So I didn't plan anything during law school because I was only in law school for a semester (got engaged a year after withdrawing) but I have friends that have done it.

A bachelorette party during spring break is manageable... assuming you've kept up on everything else. Breaks are great for catching up on stuff & studying for finals, know yourself and what you can handle.

As for getting married in the summer, it depends. Most 1Ls don't have paid internships and whoever you end up working for might be more flexible on you taking time off for a honeymoon (or, do wedding/honeymoon before internship starts). I wouldn't recommend 2L summer, because that's a busy and important tomorrow. 3L might be possible, but you'll be studying for the bar, so keep that in mind as well.

Thank you! We have a date set for the wedding for late July of 1L but everything else like bachelorette, honeymoon etc are up in the air as to when. I'm just not sure if I'll be able to take off (a day or so) from my summer internship or not for a bachelorette party! This info helps a lot!

As someone who went to law school and is now celebrating 10 years this year as an attorney, I would strongly advise you wait to either see how you adjust to law school before choosing a date, or wait until you graduate law school. It is nothing like college which shocks most first-year law students. I saw so many relationships/marriages end by the 2nd year of law school and the law school advisers actually warn about that. Also, not sure about the law school you're attending, but many "weed" out the first-years by getting rid of about a third of the class at the end of the year. If you are not very focused that first year you could see yourself not being asked back for second year. Sorry if this seems like I'm being a downer, but just trying to offer you a "real" perspective after having gone through it.

Thanks for the advice! Definitely not a downer, just a realist. I appreciate any advice at all! I'm a returning student and already have my Master's degree so I have some idea of the expectations but trying to get most of the wedding planning done before I start so I can focus more fully on 1L for sure.

I just finished my 3L (graduating tomorrow!) And was engaged my entire last year of law school. As far as the parties, I would definitely wait until after your finals. Spring Break, especially 1L, is stressful and busy because you are gearing up for finals.

I graduated from law school in May 2017 (and didn't get engaged until September 2017, so I didn't have any experience planning a wedding during law school), but I clearly remember the stress of 1L finals. So I'd definitely echo some of the other posters recommending that you're careful with what you do around finals time. However, Spring Break is usually a solid month or so before the end of classes, so if it works for everyone to have your bachelorette party then, I say you should go for it! Otherwise, you could look into planning the bachelorette party within a week after finishing up with finals, right before your summer internship starts. I think most kids get 1-2 weeks off before starting their 1L summer gigs, and it's more flexible (generally) if it's an unpaid position.

I didn't get engaged until after graduating law school, but I would avoid planning anything during Spring Break. Your 1L year will most likely be the most stressful year and there will be lots of learning curves. Honestly, I wouldn't plan any large wedding-related events until after your exams are over. When I was a 1L our legal writing professor schrduled our final writing assignment around spring break so it was finished before final exams. And even if I didn't have that to work on I would have been frantically spending the time preparing for finals and making outlines. You'll have a much better time at your bachelorette if you don't have law school stressors lingering in the back of your mind. Plus, having a bachelorette party to look forward to right after finals would be an awesome incentive while studying. A lot of summer positions won't expect you to start until a week or two after finals and a lot of them wrap up a week or two before school starts in the fall. My now fiance and I took all of our vacations mid to late August while we were in law school, right before classes started. That might be a good time for a honeymoon. Good luck with law school! It was a wild ride but totally worth it!
