Leaving dog alone?

Shaunna, on June 14, 2021 at 9:39 PM Posted in Planning 1 29
So I want to start off by saying I am stressing out so much about leaving our 2 yr old dog at home (our wedding is June 26, 2021…so really soon!)
Now, she has her own room (our spare bedroom with a Queen bed that has a window right next to it so she can look out, automatic food dispenser that we will dispense through our app, water, puppy pads (she’s a rescue so she doesn’t go potty outside), toys, nayla bones, camera, chrome book that will playing music).
The longest she’s been in the room is about 9.5 hours when I’m at work. We have to leave her in her room for about 15 hours on our wedding day. I hate that we have to do this but she doesn’t like other people (the only 2 other people she likes are in our wedding party), she uses puppy pads, and we just got her a little over a year ago so i don’t want her to have any regression because she thinks she’s going back to the shelter, so boarding isn’t an option.
Do you think this is unreasonable or do you think she will be okay? We really don’t have any other options. 😫

She should be fine! Worst case, she has an accident or two but that length of time isn’t crazy if she has food and water.

I wouldn't do that to my dog... But then we have never left our dog alone for more than 7-8 hours. How nervous/aggressive is she with strangers? I know you mentioned she doesn't like strangers but a lot of dogs are like that but will be fine with an experienced sitter. Have you tried Rover to find one to come over at least to take her for a walk?

I totally relate to this, I was super stressed about having to leave my 2 dogs for a long time on our wedding day (coming up in August!). I’ve been reassured by family that they will be fine lol as long as they have food, water, music or show playing in the background, and some air conditioning. I’m just expecting some accidents which is totally understandable. Try to stop stressing!!

She will bark/growl with her hair up when she sees anyone. We definitely think she’s doing that because she’s scared (they think she was abused) not out of aggression. She is only stops barking/growling when we are with her and petting/reassuring her she’s okay

It seems a little long but you sound prepared. Definitely expect some accidents. Be sure to spend plenty of quality time with her the day before and after.
Maybe talk to your vet about anxiety meds? She might get antsy after the 10 hour mark.
Or maybe talk to your vet about boarding there? Only if she’s decent at the vet. Usually they’re a bit better for anxious dogs boarding wise because the atmosphere is so different.

    I know 😫
We definitely will! We will also get home ASAP.
She’s on Prozac already. I never thought about her boarding at the vet. I’ll look into that and see what the vet thinks

We also were thinking of dispensing 2 calming chews along with her food at 7pm. That way she’s more relaxed until we get home

Got it. I can see it might not work to find someone new at this juncture then... So great you are able to rescue her though!

Have you tried natural calming/relaxing treats? Try them out a few days before just to see if 1. she’ll eat them and 2. how they affect her. Maybe get a baby monitor or Furbo or just a plain old security camera if you wanna check in.

We are going to purchase a camera with an app so we can see her whenever. It has night vision and you can move the camera in the app.
We have tried the calming treats so we’ll also be doing that

I have a rescue as well. ❤️🐾Leaving our dogs for an extended hours is hardest on us, humans. But your dog will be totally fine. He might have an accident or get bored. But nothing tragic.

I think that your dog will be fine especially if it uses puppy pads.

I'd strongly encourage not leaving the dog alone for this long of a period of time, as it can lead to the development of separation anxiety, which is a notoriously difficult behavior to manage. There's still time to introduce the dog to a friend, neighbor, etc., and build up a few hours of familiarity. Someone who you trust to stop by at least once during the day to spend time with the dog and check in to make sure all is well.

That’s the issue. Everyone who we could possibly have stop by will be at the wedding.
We’ve also had her around a bunch of my friends/family and she hates all of them besides two. We’ve tried working with her for this reason, but it’s unfortunately not working.
I am 100% sure that she won’t be left alone this long again, just her usual time when we are at work.

As Victoria suggested, expect there to be some accidents, and give her lots of love to make up for the lost time!

Def. recommend asking your vet though if you can board her there! We would do this, but our dog is much more comfortable at home. I do suggest maybe finding someone to just stop by every so often and check on her? That way if anything does occur, you have someone you know that is for sure going to be stopping by soon.

We're finding a local college student, or someone that lives at our apartment complex, to stop by and check up on our dog every few hours! Once we find someone we trust, we'll introduce our dog to them 2-3 times so he's used to them coming into our home! It's better than NOT having someone check on him, even if he's fine being home alone for extended periods of time.

I’m going to look into the vet today and see what they think. I wish that a vet could come and check on her because they know how to handle her demeanor.
I was even thinking after the ceremony taking my pictures at our house (not ideal whatsoever but we are like 5 minutes away from the church). That way she can be around the house until we are done.
So kind of like a split “shift”. I’m not sure if that would make it worse though, cause we wouldn’t be staying. Ugh I’m literally just trying to think of anything at this point 🥺

Has she been boarded before, and are there any in your area that have good reviews? That's always an option as well if the vet can't board her! I get your idea about the photos, but you also don't want to be going back and forth on your wedding day, but if you're fine with it, that idea could also work and at least she'd have a break where you all are home!

Good luck with the vet though, I hope they're able to board her or give any other recommendations!

We got her from the shelter last February and I think at that point they had just received her from Texas. But she was at a foster home a few days before we got her. So she’s only spent a short time in a shelter setting.
I’ll have to look elsewhere if the vet isn’t available, hopefully they are. That would make me feel much better.
    Thank you!
