Legally Requested a Name Change on my marriage certificate but am debating whether to submit it.

Margaret, on September 21, 2021 at 6:28 PM Posted in Married Life 1 4

Hello friends!

I legally requested to change my last name (hyphenate) on our marriage certificate. I'm curious if I need to submit my marriage certificate name change to the corresponding govt. offices (Social Security, DMV, etc.) or if I can just hold off until I feel like I would want to change.

Anyone else make the change on their marriage certificate but didn't actually end up changing it later?

Hello there. I got married in July, I made the change on my marriage license and social security card, mailed off my passport as well. I haven’t changed it at work, nor on my drivers license.

I’m not hyphenating.. took his name.

Hi Margaret! I'd recommend calling the clerk's office where you got your marriage certificate and asking them, but otherwise I'd don't think anything legally changes for you until you get the ball rolling with SS, DMV, etc.!

Great tip, I was thinking that nothing would change legally either unless I apply it to the agencies you mentioned. Thanks, Lynnie!
