Length of reception?

RealLifeBride, on November 18, 2016 at 11:05 PM Posted in Planning 0 24

Originally I thought we needed like 5.5 hours for the wedding / reception: 30 minutes arrival time (our wedding is in January in the land of snow - so driving delays, boot and jacket removal etc.) 30 minutes for ceremony, 1 hour for dinner, 1.5 hours for dancing / mingling, cake and then another 1.5 hours of dancing/mingling, but as the date is getting closer I'm thinking this is way to much time! We have our venue for 14 hours for set up , event and taredown. What is a realistic wedding timeline? Thanks so much our invites state 5:30 pm if that helps.

We have our ceremony 330-4p, 4-5p cocktail hour (we'll do pics on beach) then 5-630ish slotted for cake cutting, 4 course plated dinner, couple quick toasts, then segway special dances into everyone dancing until 9pm (nice and early as we'll need to be at airport at the crack ass of dawn...lol) I'm sure these times could overlap a bit, but I'm not too worried as our ceremony and reception are at the same venue.....so however it rolls out will be great! :+)

Our ceremony started at 3pm. And reception was supposed to end at 10pm. But things ended at 8:30pm. I was sad it went by so fast, but guest were gone much earlier then expected.

Hmm, okay I guess I was not to of on my time line. i was going to print programs with a timeline of events, and figured some people might start leaving after cake? We aren't really doing a send off, but just a last dance. What are your thoughts on scheduling the ceremony to start at 6 even though the invites say to arrive at 5:30? Everything is at one location and guests are actually sitting at there dinner seats for the ceremony and can help themselves to beverages before hand and doodle on the tables.

My ceremony is at 3. Between travel time and receiving line at church, we set the cocktail hour at 5-6. We're walking in between 6-6:15, first dance, parent dances, dad speech/blessing, start dinner hopefully by 6:30. BM/MOH speeches between courses, cut cake around 8, start dancing, wrap up around 10!

    Our ceremony is 1:30-2:20

    Cocktails @ 2:45

    Dinner @ 4:15

    Open dancing @ 7

    Last bar call 9:45

    End at 10.

So ours is a 8 and a half hour day. We have to start so early though because of the church so ours might not have been so long if it weren't for this

We are doing 7 hours from start of ceremony to end of reception. Ceremony goes from 4:00-4:30 then cocktail hour. Reception starts at 6:00. Dinner will be served from 6:30-7:30 and then dances, speeches, cake, etc. I added 2 extra hours because I felt like a 3 hour reception wasn't enough time.

Robin, a lot depends on you and your circle of friends. My wedding was noon, reception 1-5, and I was *done* by 5. Having a blast, not wanting it to end, but just *tired* and wanting to be alone with my sweetie. On the flip side, my baby brother just got married in August-- wedding at 3, reception from 6 till 2 am, and I understand he, his husband, and a bunch of their friends walked down to the lake and went swimming at that point-- clearly *they* would have barely gotten started at my wedding! So, if you're thinking this might be longer than you want, you may be right. Do you have any weddings to attend in the interim that would help you gauge just how much energy you're likely to have?
