I had my very first successful alterations appointment on Tuesday. [THANK YOU 2ND BRIDE FOR YOUR RECOMMENDATION!!!] Surprisingly, it was the very first time I had ever looked at, or even thought about a bustle. My wedding gown is quite simple so I had a difficult time deciding on something I liked. If I was crazy I’d just take scissors and cut off the train after the ceremony! I haven’t seen too many posts on WW regarding the different types so I thought this would be a good post to see what everyone else plans to do.

As we all probably know, Bustles are used to lift the long trains of wedding gowns off the floor. Typically it’s lifted with buttons, pearls or ties (ribbon in my case) to create a style that’s practical. There are different types of bustle options. What type are you planning on getting?

My only requirement was 'nothing that looks like it's coming out of my butt' Smiley smile

i actually don't think my bustle fits into any of the above... when i have pics i'll post. mine has 7 small bustle points at the very bottom, so it almost doesn't look bustled at all - more 'gathered' at the bottom.

Do you think you can do the Austrian with a mermaid gown? I didn't even think about different bustles! Thanks so much for posting this.

One more thing to think about!!

Thanks, this is really helpful! I hadn't thought about it either. I really like the under bustle.

I am doing an under bustle because my dress is a ball gown that already has peices of it kind of tucked under, so it just looks like the same theme throughout. My seamstress suggested that, I originally had only thought of the over the top bustle.

@ Tammy, you also need to think about cost and how difficult it will be for you MOH... I bet the Austrian is a complicated.

Kimi is dead on... go in with images of how you like the back of the dress to look, and they will keep pinning up ideas showing you options until you find one you like.

Be sure to ask them the PRICE as they are doing this.

A 7 point under bustle costs more than an 3 point under bustle.

I think mine was a 5 point under. Kinda like Jennifer N - it made sense because there already was some material to tuck it under.

    * seriously Jennifer - I was in shock too to see my comment right under yours *

@Tammy, it would be VERY difficult to do the Austrian bustle on a mermaid type gown. You may have little to no movement. It works best on a ball gown since there's so much fabric. I'm sure if you bring pictures your seamstress can work with you to figure out what would be the best.

Hayley is right on about the price ;o)

My dress has no train so no bustle for me....and I couldn't be happier. That was one detail I totally didn't want to deal with.

I love this subject!!!!! Julie - If your lace overlay is significantly longer than the satin underlayer you should bustle them separately. This gown has a ballroom bustle on the satin layer, and a custom designed bustle on the lace layer

Christine, do you have any pictures you could share to get a visual? I had a difficult time trying to hunt one down.

Haha Jaclyn & RWC, I don't think any bride wants to look as if she's pooping out wedding dress.

@Jess, I love the front of your dress. You'll have to share what your bustle will look like! maybe a 7point under? That way the cascade look wouldn't change? (similiar to what haley posted with the sash ribbon??)
