Lets talk Guest books for a minute

Cassi, on July 31, 2019 at 1:25 PM Posted in Planning 1 57

So ORIGINALLY i was set on getting a nice wood slab and have everyone sign it. I had it all planned out. I work for a very large company that does exotic lumber and live edge slabs so I had it tested out on sample pieces and I was thrilled. The lead finisher at my job walked me through it and showed me everything and my job was going to gift us the slab and we would just have to pay for it to be finished once it was all signed or we could opt to finish it ourselves. I definitely wanted the finisher to do it because I didn't want to ruin anything. We tested pens and markers and found the best brands that worked. Long story short my lead finisher left and we have someone new! Shes great I just don't know.... I didn't go through the entire process with her and how it was going to be done and now its so close that I just don't know if it would be worth attempting. So i started thinking of other ideas.

I'm pretty curious what everyone else is doing. Let me know which of my ideas you like best and tell me what you decided on! I'm 2 months out!

1.) Frame this and do fingerprints with a name next to eachLets talk Guest books for a minute 12.) old school, this would trigger nostalgia. I love this idea as well but idk about how expensive film would be and how hard it could get for guests if they have to change out the film every so often and what not. Lets talk Guest books for a minute 23.) This was my original idea and turning the slab into a side table! Lets talk Guest books for a minute 3

4.) Keeping with the wood theme this would be super cute and a lot easier for my to do without help from someone else Lets talk Guest books for a minute 45.) More wood ideas but not a slab. This would be a prefinished piece and use markers on surface and then r- varnish but again... idk. I love the idea of using it or hanging it somewhere which is why I keep coming back to wood ideas (plus easily accessible through my job) Lets talk Guest books for a minute 5

I did number 1! I wanted a piece of artwork to display so I had a friend actually paint the tree for me on a canvas I bought from a craft store.

I really love the slab idea. I wanted something like that but don't have the access to good slabs. I'll probably be doing a canvas with a tree and everyone signs a leaf. I wanted a thumb print one but some people would get cranky about getting their hands dirty 🙄🙄🙄

Your idea is awesome for number 3! I'm going to be doing #5, my dad and one of his friends are going to make one like that. Back up plan is to just order one if I have to! Not that I don't think they can do it, but just in case.

We are doing a photo album with photo strip slots that fit the strips from the photobooth. I love the slab idea. Do you not trust her? Wouldn't it be the same as taking it to another company to finish it for you, if you get what I mean? You wouldn't necessarily know an outside person to do it either. If you really don't want to do the slab I like 4 or 5!

So the company I work for does this for a living. We make slabs and tables and such. But when I chose the slab idea I was working with our lead finisher. We tested different woods and finishing methods and found what worked and what pens/ markers would work as well. But since then he has left the company and we hired someone new. She does great work but the method we were originally going to do isn't a traditional method my job offers its something the finisher came up with so no I don't really trust anyone else to do it because my worry is they would say they could and start and whatever they used to finish would cause ink and markers to smear or rub away. Theres not enough time between her orders out there and my wedding for her to really experiment and try different methods. The guy I was working with tried 6 different methods over the course of 4 months to figure out what one worked best and trust me most of them destroyed everything I wrote on the wood except for 2 methods and the one was the best but idk what that method was, he came up with it.

Ahhh I see. Yeah unfortunately that sounds too complicated to ask anyone else to do it. That's a shame he left! I am sure you will find something else you love! I agree I like the wood theme. Something to hang up wouldn't be bad

As a lover on non-traditional, I like the fingerprint one the best.

I love option #1 and #5. This is the guestbook we went with. I purchased it on Etsy. Can't wait for it to arrive!

This is what we decided to go with! There’s so many different options for the words in the middle on Etsy, or you can buy one at hobby lobby. Every other week they are 50% off.

We are doing the second choice and I got our film on Amazon, it was 60 pictures for $31 and I ordered 2 sets so I paid $62 for 120 pictures. I also ordered a black page scrapbook and gold and silver markers from Amazon

What camera did you get and where did you get it from? I ask because all the cameras I looked at only can take 20 pieces of film at a time and I'm worried about people trying to load them and it breaking or something like that.

I really liked your original idea, and personally would try to do a trial run with the new finisher, or at least look at her work. She was hired for a reason I'm sure!

Can you track your original finisher down? Maybe he could still do it since you were planning to pay for that part anyway.
