So ORIGINALLY i was set on getting a nice wood slab and have everyone sign it. I had it all planned out. I work for a very large company that does exotic lumber and live edge slabs so I had it tested out on sample pieces and I was thrilled. The lead finisher at my job walked me through it and showed me everything and my job was going to gift us the slab and we would just have to pay for it to be finished once it was all signed or we could opt to finish it ourselves. I definitely wanted the finisher to do it because I didn't want to ruin anything. We tested pens and markers and found the best brands that worked. Long story short my lead finisher left and we have someone new! Shes great I just don't know.... I didn't go through the entire process with her and how it was going to be done and now its so close that I just don't know if it would be worth attempting. So i started thinking of other ideas.

I'm pretty curious what everyone else is doing. Let me know which of my ideas you like best and tell me what you decided on! I'm 2 months out!

1.) Frame this and do fingerprints with a name next to eachcfb_1250139.jpg2.) old school, this would trigger nostalgia. I love this idea as well but idk about how expensive film would be and how hard it could get for guests if they have to change out the film every so often and what not. cfb_1250141.jpg3.) This was my original idea and turning the slab into a side table! cfb_1250143.jpg

4.) Keeping with the wood theme this would be super cute and a lot easier for my to do without help from someone else cfb_1250145.jpg5.) More wood ideas but not a slab. This would be a prefinished piece and use markers on surface and then r- varnish but again... idk. I love the idea of using it or hanging it somewhere which is why I keep coming back to wood ideas (plus easily accessible through my job) cfb_1250147.jpg

My favorites are #3-5 with your original idea being my favorite.

This is what we are doing. Its super simple and cheap and i painted it myself. Not fancy but very us.

If you dont mind me asking, what pens did you decide work best without bleeding?

This is very cute! The best ones we found were the Pilot G-207 pens

I would make sure surface is as smooth as possible though because they are pens and not markers (a lot of markers bled on unfinished wood)

Thats exciting! and super awesome your venue gave you a bunch! Are you going to leave them in the bottle or are going to incorporate them in your house? I've seen super cool wine cork walls.

I think I'm just going to leave them in the bottle. I have open shelving so I'll probably just make an arrangement with the jug and some wine bottles from the reception.

Love your idea! Hope it works out! We are going with something similar to #5 you posted where everyone signs the wood. I like that it gives everyone a chance to write something a little personal, instead of just their name.

#5 is my favorite but they're all so cute! This is our guestbook. Guests will sign a heart and drop it into the frame and then we will hang it on the wall!

I've read a ton of reviews and didn't see too many that were concerning, just a few that were defective. Mine seems to be fine, but I've only used it a few times because I don't want to waste the film.

I love your wood slab idea. To me I want something that I will actually want in my house and want to look at. So, I would go with something that matches your home aesthetic unless you're just wanting to throw it away after (Then what's the point of having one at all??). I'm going the polaroid pictures one because I know that those pictures will never go out of style in my home and I'll have them forever. I may not like the fingerprint tree on my wall 5 years down the road but I'll always love the pictures. I bought a scrapbook and hot glued little envelopes to each page so that people could put their polaroid into the envelope and write something next to it. I think that's a better way of doing it then making them tape it in there themselves. Don't want to run out of tape or something.

I've seen that slab (and other) signature type guestbooks all over the place. It makes it hard to decide on what to go with but I think I'm gonna try harder to find something that will either match more with the theme or the wedding or something that will go better with us as a couple. I like the idea of having something that you can frame or hang so that you can see it everyday, instead of just some little book that will sit on a shelf forgotten somewhere. I mean honestly, how often are you likely to go through a book? I've seen like those drop boxes with different shaped items like hearts or leaves or shells. So something that will stand out and not get lost.

I think go with the wood theme because you have that as your vision which I totally get. I would have a back up one like the wood tray just in case but keep having faith in the new lead (there is a reason she got the job) also make sure to have fine tip markers so the ink doesn’t run or bleed

I like your original idea best! You still have 2 months so can you check out any of her finished products between now and then?

Using a slab and turning it into a side table sounds amazing, honestly.

The problem is this is my job. Shes great. But the person I worked with first had to go through a number of experiments to find what worked so it didn't smear all the markers or anything like that. Like I work with the lead finisher and I trust her but I don't think she has the time to find a method that will work.

As I mentioned in previous comments its not that I don't trust her. Shes awesome and a friend of mine. The problem is the finisher I was working with it took him 4 months to find a process that worked with the pen and markers without smearing them or causing them to rub off. So I know she is fully capable of doing it, I just don't know what the process was he finished and I don't think she has enough time to experiment (when he started it was in winter time which is our slow season, but now we are in busy season and lead times in general are 6 weeks).
