Letting Bridesmaids Pick their own dresses?

Has anyone just given the bridesmaids a swatch of the color you want and told them a length and let them have at it? What were your results? Do you have pictures? I really just want all my girls to be comfortable and happy with their choices and then they can spend as little or as much as they want....

I did this, and it worked out perfectly! I need to wait a few more weeks for the rest of my pro pics, so this is all I have with the bridesmaids in it for now. You can only see the tops of their dresses, but they each chose a knee length navy blue dress. Each one was different and suited each girl.

I told them royal blue and long. They got together and decided they all wanted to wear the same dress. They took me along and they decided on a dress they all fell in love with. They wanted my approval and I said if they love it, I love it. I don't have any pictures on my new phone unfortunately.

I gave my girls a color and told them they could wear whatever they wanted...same with shoes and jewelry. I want them to be comfortable and find something they like.

I told them I wanted the color plum and then all floor length. Only 3 are wearing plum in the picture but they'll be the same color.

I did this but found that it was still difficult for them to decide. I think a couple of them wished I would have just picked a dress for them. My MOH will be in a guava colored women's suit, and everyone else managed to find something at David's...although it required sometimes going to two or three different David's stores because they didnt like the available options in store. My suggestion if you do this is to choose a color readily available at several retailers (unlike David's Guava).

I told my bridesmaids the colour I wanted. But the style of the dress is totally their choice. As for my MOH, she gets to decide both the colour and the style! They are all quite happy with this decision. I'm pretty sure you'll get good results this way.

I have 3 bridesmaids and they are all of totally different sizes and shapes. We went to a bridal salon. I picked the designer by the color swatch I liked best and they each picked their own dress.

One is strapless, one has a lace keyhole top/back, and the other has a V neck with thick straps.

I think it looks so beautiful with all different dresses in the same color! What a thoughtful idea as well - I have yet to be a bridesmaid, but I know that I would appreciate getting to choose what looks best on me and my style! I'm definitely going to do this for my bridesmaids Smiley smile

I told my girls to get whatever (sage to forest) green floor length dress they wanted. I am having a forest wedding so I wanted them to be different like the shades of green in trees. This way they are in something they love and that speaks to their personalities. So far I have an all lace dress, a satin one, a full sequin one, a cotton hippy one, and a chiffon typical bridesmaid dress one. They are all so different and totally compliment each girl. Its going to be so fun to see them all together!

I told everyone in my wedding party to pick whatever dress they like just get the same color. Well my MOH took it upon herself to get a dress a totally different color! Now I'm stuck with 5 bridesmaids in Corral and 1 in Eggplant. The store she went to does not allow returns or refunds which sucks because now it's going to look crazy, at least I think so.

Yes! It worked beautifully! The only other stipulation I put on was the fabric, no satin or "shiny" like fabrics. It worked well because each girl picked what they were comfortable I and what they could afford.

Thanks for asking this I was just about to! I am thinking of telling them a color and length but was going to go shopping individually or groups with each of them to look for them and see what they choose! Wanted to have the experience of going out as a group but don't think that will work out too great so figured pairs or solo will work great !

I like the idea of giving the girls the freedom to choose what they are comfortable in. Maybe provide a few links to dresses you like in different styles and price ranges so that if they can't find anything on their own they can always fall back on a dress you've already suggested.

I just gave my MOH some color suggestions and she found a gorgeous dress she feels great in.

I'm looking at Azazie or Alfred Angelo. I think if I do decide to do this I'll also add in type of fabric. Thank you for all the suggestions the pictures all look beautiful.

I just want to add that if you have any of you friends have questionable fashion taste or choices. Ask them to let you see a picture BEFORE they buy. I've seen this go really really wrong (think cotton sundress, polka dots & very sexy club dress with 4" platform heels to a formal wedding where most guest wore gowns).

I do think if you give them a color and a general direction most women can find a flattering appropriate dress.

I did this as well. I just told MOH and BM that as long as they chose a purple or yellow dress we were good! I also told this to my flower girl's mom. My MOH and BM are wearing dark purple floor length dresses and the flower girl has a yellow dress! I think it will be beautiful on Saturday!! ;-)

Plan to do this with my BMs with a lil guidance. Just going to pick designer and color then let them pick a dress.

I picked the designer and color and let them pick whatever they wanted. I was going to pick all short length as well but my MOH felt more comfortable in a long dress instead of short so she's the only one who got long. I've seen all 3 dresses (just not together) and they all look great.
