Linens

Britten, on September 13, 2017 at 10:38 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 2 17

Hi All!

I purchased my linens, and I now need recommendations on the best way to get the creases and wrinkles out. Has anyone found success with steaming vs ironing? And if steaming, what have you used? I have polyester tablecloths and organza runners/overlays.

Any help would be great because I have about 40 to do!

I honestly have no idea. I would think ironing would be easiest but you'd have to make sure the setting isn't too hot and fabric can handle it.

I'm a big fan of tossing things in the dryer. What I'd do is put them in the dryer, Dampen a clean white rag with water and just a splash of fabric softener (OR mist each cloth with a mixture of water and a splash of fabric softener), and put them in the dryer. While drying, string like a broom stick or tension rod between two chair backs like a sturdy laundry line off the floor. Once the dryer is done, take them out immediately. Shake them out, and hang them over the "line". Store them this way and they won't wrinkle as long as there arent any folds

Or you can do the same method with the sturdy clothes line and steam them individually

Believe it or not I took a chance and did one in the dryer. It worked beautifully, no ironing was required. The ones I did were Satin (both tablecloths and runners).

The organza runners and overlays are easy. The following is for the polyester cloths.

Throw them in the dryer with a damp towel. Give them a good snap when you take them out and hang as above.

You will likely still have to iron them.

Prepare a wider rod to hang them and have it higher up so the cloths don't drag in the floor. Cover a dowel with a pool noodle split down one side. This really helps not to get creases

Use the steam setting on your iron. and spray with extra steam as you are ironing.

I ironed my chair sashes, table runners, and chair covers. When I ironed the sashes and table runners I set my iron to silk and did the non shinny side then hung them over each other on a hanger. I started doing my chair covers and set the iron to linen and I am amazed on how well and quick it takes the wrinkles out. My only problem with the chair covers is that I am not sure how to get them to my venue without re-wrinkling

Thank you all! @Erin, I am trying to figure that out as well - I know everything is not going to be 100% perfect, so I am thankful for dimmer lighting in that case! Smiley smile

Yes the dryer, a wet cloth and fabric softener sheets are definitely a great way to remove the wrinkles.

I despise ironing with every fiber of my being. So I jumped at the forced opportunity to purchase a garment steamer. It just so happens it works perfectly on the linens we bought for our tables. A pro tip I got from a lady who rents them is to steam them and fold and store them in half (if they're round, they give you a center to run your runner across). It takes up a lot of room, so I am going to quarter them and then totally not stress about the extra crease. I swear I'm not and I promised FH I won't. But on the off chance I do... the steamer is coming to the venue the morning of with us.

I was wondering about this myself! I have to do something to dewrinkle and transport. I don't have a steamer but might have to look for one.

I plan throwing down the linens, spraying some downy wrinkle releaser and calling it night!

We have a steam setting on our dryer, so we did each one in there for 10 minutes or so, them folded them and did a quick once over with the iron. Ours were polyester.

No experience with tablecloths- but I have a mini steamer from B.B.& B, it rocks for getting ready in the am. If I were you I would get a full size steamer.

@Erin , purchase some of the hangers pictured, place 2 chair covers together and fold them in half where the seat of the chair begins to expand and clip away! I used to work for an event rental company and that is the best way to keep the wrinkles out!

Great Post Marissa because getting wrinkles out is half the battle and getting them to venue without wrinkles is the other half. My uncle made me a box on wheels with dowel rods to hang ironed drapes on?

This post is relevant to me (I bought overlays), but all I can think about is how to keep my cats away from all of these set ups! I refer to one of them as the "shitty kitty" so you can imagine my faith in him leaving anything alone is minimal...

I just tried washing a few of my tablecloths and it seems like they're more wrinkled coming out of the dryer than they were going in. So I won't be bothering with the rest of them and will just hope the other decor and dim lighting distract from the wrinkles. Not that worried about it!!!
