Lipstick and Setting Spray recommendations

Andie , on September 25, 2019 at 10:42 AM Posted in Hair and Makeup 1 13
So I’m getting married on October 5th. I’ve been in bed since Friday with the flu... I think I’m finally on the upswing, but still running some fevers, so still can’t go out and get things done. I’m going a little stir crazy and trying to do/organize things from my bed, so that when I’m all better, I can start really knocking out my to-do list.

That brings me to make up. I rarely wear make up and any lipstick I’ve worn in the past has been cheap. I’m planning on going to Ulta (I’ve never been) and trying out different lipsticks or lip stains, and buying one for my wedding day. I’m looking for long lasting and budget friendly. I usually buy drug store make up, I’m willing to splurge a little here but not get crazy.

I’m also interested in purchasing a setting spray. Once again, effective but not gonna break the bank. Any recommendations there?

Posting a pic of my trial make up. The lipstick shade she used was a little purple for my taste, in thinking more pinks, but I didn’t completely hate it.

I think your makeup looks great, I love the lip color! As for long lasting lipstick, I know a lot of girls here recommend a lipstain but I don't have any experience with those. I am a big fan of Kat Von D liquid lipstick, it dries matte and STAYS on. It is more costly than drugstore, but it's $20 so not terribly expensive. Basically the only non-drugstore thing in my sad little makeup collection lol.

I’ll have to check those out, $20 feels like a reasonable splurge lol.

I used a Kylie Jenner Lip Kit on our wedding day, and I'm so happy I did! I bought a Fenti Lip Stain too, and one other kind (can't remember which one) and I didn't like either. I signed up for emails from Kylie Cosmetics & ordered during a sale, I think I paid $25 or something.

We had rain & a ton of humidity on our wedding day. My lipstick stayed on from 4 PM - past midnight and never got on my husband.Lipstick and Setting Spray recommendations 2

I love my setting spray by Urban Decay. I picked it up with a Sephora matte lip stain and both lasted all night with a lot of eating and drinking. Both were reasonably priced for non drugstore product.

For setting spray urban decay all nighter is really good but the best possible one you can get is ben nye final seal! People use it on stage to keep their makeup from melting under the lights and it’s amazing. Only like $9

I agree with previous posts suggesting Urban Decay's All Nighter Spray! It is a little more pricey but it is well worth it! I use this almost everyday & have super oily skin. The spray helps keep me matte & locks in my makeup.

Another trick that is more affordable is using a light hair spray. Celebrities use this trick for red carpets/broadway shows as well as drag queens. I personally have never tried this but my friend does & swears by it! The hair spray really locks in the makeup and also gives a more "lifted" look. I would def test this out first & only do a few sprays.

I’ve actually always used hair spray, a friend in college taught me to use hair spray as setting spray and have since then. I was trying to be a little more classy for my wedding day lol.

LOL! What the guests won't know won't kill them 😉.

But if you're wanting a true setting spray I still highly reccommend Urban Decay! You can even get their small travel size, it's cheaper & won't leave you with a lot of product since you don't wear makeup everyday. Seriously this spray has survived some ROUGH situations haha. I live in AZ and when I'm working outside and break a sweat it still lasts!

Ben Nye has really good long-lasting makeup because it was originally a brand for stage makeup! They have great setting sprays and setting powders. It can be hard to find in stores sometimes, and I'm not sure Ulta carries it specifically. But if you can find it, definitely give it a try.

For a setting spray, I also recommend Urban Decay's All Nighter Setting Spray. They have mini travel sizes too that are cheaper if you're really only looking for something for your wedding. I also really like NYX's Matte Finish Makeup Setting Spray.

If you're looking for a pink lipstick, a good rule of thumb is looking for a shade that matches the color of your gums. I personally love NARS' Anita lipstick, but I'm not sure they sell it at Ulta (they definitely sell it at Sephora). But take a look at the other NARS lipsticks -- I think their pinks are a lot more natural-looking. I also really love the BareMinerals Gen Nude Matte Liquid Lipcolor if you're looking for a liquid lipstick. They have some really good pinks.

The key to making your lipstick last is setting it with powder. Put the lipstick on, and blot with a tissue like you normally would to remove the excess product. Then take a clean piece of tissue and hold it tightly over your lips with your lips apart (make an "O" with your mouth). Take some setting powder and brush it over the tissue paper over your lips. This will allow just a little bit of powder to get through and will help set your lipstick. I actually find toilet paper to be the best way to do this if you tear apart the toilet paper so it's only 1-ply -- the thinner the better.

I’m also in AZ, it’s supposed to be 88-90 on my wedding day and my dress is kind of heavy and hot, so I’m hoping it works miracles. Good advice on the travel size, because on the rare occasions i wear make up, $3 hair spray does fine lol

Lots of good advice here. Thank you! Like I said, I’ve never been to Ulta. I’m assuming there’s people there to help you pick lipsticks and stuff, but I don’t want to go in blind.
