Liquor - Help Please!

Sarah, on May 29, 2014 at 6:17 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 19

I need help to stock the bar for my wedding. I'm not a big drinker, I mostly drink wine and the occasional beer. What are you serving at your wedding? I'm thinking aside from wine and beer, we will stock Rum, Vodka, Tequila, Gin, Whisky... What am I missing? Also, which brands are you serving?

Mixers to go with that booze. Those are good choices you got going.

Our venue doesn't allow anything other than beer and wine so thats what were having haha I don't drink much but I'm buying it from a warehouse store kind of like costco. There are websites that help you calculate your drink amounts but really just gaging your crowd. Most of our guests don't drink wine but I am really looking forward to wine tasting so we can pick out the flavors.

My crowd are going to be heavy wine drinkers and quite a few beer drinkers. FH and his friends often drink whisky on the rocks as well. So I just need a few bottles of liquor. Just wondering some decent brands? Do people generally prefer spiced rum?

Brands. It depends on how much you want to spend. We knew that *most* guests would be doing mixed drinks (ie vodka tonic) so we went with the house/well liquors.

They house/well liquors were: Seagram's Vodka, Bacardi Rum, Gordon's Gin, Jose Cuervo Tequila, Jim Beam Bourbon & Dewar's Scotch.

The bar supplied mixers...tonic, soda, orange juice, pineapple juice, sodas (coke, diet coke, sprite), limes/lemons/oranges/cherries

And my dad and his siblings like good bourbon. So there ware a bottle of call liquor (bourbon) behind the bar for them (upon request).

We also have to stock our own liquor. We bought Smirnoff vodka, some orange vodka, tanqueray gin, bacardi white rum, captain morgan rum, Jack daniels, jose cuervo tequila, malibu rum, and kahlua. (The last 2 were special for family.) I also got triple sec and sour mix if people want margaritas or long islands.

You might try seeing if you can get a little data on the drinking preferences of your guests and target those. Maybe a social media post "question of the day" -- What is your favorite adult beverage? or something similar but more fun. Smiley smile

That's a good idea songbird, unfortunately My WHOLE side of the family and all my friends drink wine. My brothers drink beer, but I don't know FH's sides preferences as well except for my FMIL who also drinks wine. His friends all drink beer and whisky but I'm just not terribly certain about his extended family and I don't have them on FB. But if I did a general poll I could probably get some stats anyways Smiley smile

I love beer and whiskey! .... alcoholism Smiley winking

Anyways, there's a ton of whiskey's out there that are delicious and fairly inexpensive. Personally, my favorite is a local one called Woodinville Rye, Rye whiskey is great on it's own but isn't so harsh that you can't mix it. My understanding is that you can purchase a case or a few cases from them wholesale-and it's super cheap. I bet they'd ship.

If you know that most of your guests will be drinking wine and beer and the groomsmen are the only ones drinking hard a, then maybe consider only getting wine and beer and spending more on more of that rather than bothering with the booze. Just a thought. You can make a groomsman "whiskey cake" so they have whiskey and maybe keep a bottle or two of vodka, it's a crowd pleaser. But it sounds like your guests won't bother so much with that. Good luck!

Oh, when I say "my whole side" I guess it might mislead you to think that's half the guests. "my whole side" is less than a third of the guests haha. oops. Thanks everyone I have some ideas to go with now!

We had many drinkers at our wedding.

We had whiskey, rum, gin and vodka.

Specialty cocktails were cayman island lemonade with pink lemonade vodka or cherry coke and spiced rum.

Mixers- sweet and sour, grenadine, lime juice, tonic

    Beer/ wine

Everyone loved the variety at our bar

We were planning on doing beer, wine, and a signature cocktail. That way we save money on getting a ton of different alcohols.

My FH does not really drink and does not like beer so I am buying him his own special bottle for the night. The guests will be getting a normal beer keg and then I am also getting a keg of hard cider. Imo most people will drink beer if you have it and it's free. So I guess it also depends, are you having an open bar. If so how much do you want to spend

FH and I both drink and I bartended for years. Here's what I would have for a four hour wedding for 100 people (all 1.75 liter bottles unless otherwise noted).

    3 bottles of Smirnoff Vodka

3 flavored vodkas (blueberry, lemon and orange - 0.75 liters)

    1 bottle of Tanqueray Gin

    2 bottles Bacardi White Rum

1 bottle Malibu (or other coconut rum - 0.75 liters)

1 bottle Jose Cuervo Tequilla Gold

    2 bottles Dewars Scotch

    1 bottle Jack Daniels Whiskey

1 bottle Triple Sec (0.75 liter)

    1 bottle Heaven Hill Bourbon

1 bottle Southern Comfort (0.75 liters)

Mixers: (should be equal to about a gallon)

    Orange Juice,

    Cranberry Juice

    Pineapple Juice

    Sour Mix

    Grapefruit Juice (1/2 gallon)

    Club Soda

    Tonic

    Ginger Ale

    Coke

    Sprite

Garnishes - Oranges, Lemons, Limes, Olives and Marischino Cherries.

It sounds like a lot, but many people will switch to hard booze when it's open bar also, if someone wants a particular cocktail, you should have the ingredients.

We are doing jack daniels, jameson whiskey and belvedere vodka. We also have beer and wine ( red/white). We only chose to do 3 hard liquors bc we already know the company we have and what they like. My FH is a bartender and so he is taking care of this mostly.

Sarah we are also stocking our bar so I am in the same boat as you! I think your initial post of the types of liquor sound great. I have the same types on my list. I am still not sure on the brands except we are having Captain Morgan for the spiced rum and Jack Daniels whiskey. We have lots of family and friends that drink that specific brand of liquor. Are you going with kegs or bottles/ cans for your beer?

Karen- Is that what you would suggest for a moderate/ heavy drinking crowd? I don't want to run out of booze! Thank you for the information, it is helpful.

Thank you everyone!!! We are doing bottles or cans not kegs because we can return unopened bottles to the store for a refund but if you only drink half a leg you're stuck with it.
