Live Band vs. dj

Hey everyone! Which did you choose between a live band or DJ, and why? I feel like there are pros/cons to both!

We're choosing DJ! Live bands are very cool, but we have such a wide range of music tastes that a DJ better suited our needs! Also, the DJ we're going with will do our ceremony and reception, have wireless mics for toasts and ceremony speaking, as well as lights for the dance floor.

Same as the first one!! DJ due to music taste, and our DJ is also providing karaoke for our guests to sing in they would like.

Originally was only going to hire a pianist, but I came across a live band (male and female vocals) that sounded pretty amazing. They have mics to use for speeches/toasts, will take on MC duties, and have a pretty large repertoire, but I’m pretty excited to have someone live singing the ceremony songs instead of prerecorded music. I think you have to consider the vibe you are going for and if you look around, a lot of live bands these days also can do a mix of singing live/playing recorded music. Ours is a Sunday brunch intimate wedding, so live music was pretty much a no brainer!

We chose a live band. They played instrumental music for our ceremony as well. We chose a band because we had a formal wedding at a very fancy venue, and it went better with the vibe of the wedding. We loved how our band was able to improvise to fit our style, and they catered to both our tastes and to our crowd in a personalized way. The cons were the cost--live bands are SO much more expensive than DJs. But our live band made for such a unique and memorable experience at our wedding and we loved it!

Dj hands down! We like to hear music by the original artists. Also it's much less expensive

We are having a 6 piece live band.

I prefer bands over a DJ because I feel like the dancing atmosphere is so much better with a band. With that said, it needs to be a good band who understand the crowd!

DJ: usually cheaper, wider variety of music, better for younger guests who love to dance, can work the room.

Band: classier, can’t beat live music, better for older guests or a black tie wedding, great for ambience too.

My father had always been pro-live band... until he realized they would have a very strict set list, and would have to take a break... and cost a LOT more than a DJ.

Thankfully, he realized that *before* I had to talk him into the DJ (who I paid for anyway, but I didn't want to argue with my dad).

Bands can be really great, but on a cost-to-benefit ratio, I say DJ.

DJ , first is cost, but then with our specific venue there really was not a place for a band to set up. Plus, when it comes to music, especially the special songs, I always prefer the original version over a band doing it...unless it's the actual artist...and I can't afford that lol
