Livestock gift registry?

Lauren, on May 20, 2018 at 9:22 PM Posted in Registry 0 16

Hi all,

My Fiance and I are in the process of buying farmland for us to build our own farm up. For our gift registry we would like to set up a "Fill the Barn" registry where guests can contribute by purchasing things like a chicken, sheep or join in on a group gift of a cow. We would also like to be able to include things such as feeders and tools that we will need. Does anyone have recommendations of online registry sites that let you add your own items that are not available to purchase online? I looked at Zola but if we wanted to add say 25 chickens, at $25 each we would either have to do 25 individual cash listings for a chicken or a cash option of $625. Ideally we would like to have it set up similar to a regular registry where it would say 25 chickens x $25 and give guests the option of how many they would like to purchase. No idea if this is possible or which website would be the best option to do this.

**We are from Canada, if that makes any difference.

Thanks!

Sorry I can't help. I wouldn't be comfortable with this. I was taught that wedding registries are to help set up your home, not your business.

Is this going to be a working farm or more like a homestead? As PP’s said, if you want me to buy you a chicken or cow so you can sell eggs or milk, I wouldn’t be comfortable. If you plan on going “off-grid” and using it for personal use, that may be different but farming isn’t cheap. If you can’t afford the basics needed to start a farm, maybe a farm isn’t the right thing for you

I'm very confused. Are there actual animals on the registry? Could someone select a specific chicken from the registry? What happens if only half a cow is purchased? Or is this some odd attempt to collecting money from your guests? If what you really want is money, just don't register. People will give you with financial gifts. Bonus, Great Aunt Didi won't ask after the chicken she gifted you in a couple of years

My fiance and I have a farm as well and found that if you don't have a large registry, people will give cash. For my bridal shower my sister included a note that that we would also appreciate gift cards for Tractor Supply or Lowe's, which we also got a few of. I think your best bet is to do a small registry or see if there's a farm store in Canada you can register at. Asking for money specifically for certain animals is a bit strange to me and your guests may not understand.

I would have a small registry at a place like Home Depot, Lowe's, Tractor Supply, etc. for some small farming basics that could double as home care/ maintenance basics. I would not try to register for actual livestock- so many things could go wrong with that. If you and your FH want to use the cash you get from the wedding to start a farm, I think that's great! But that is a personal decision for you and your FH, not between you, your FH, and all your guests.

It would be more of a homestead farm. Just a few sheep and couple cows and some chickens, not a big farm by any means. We just feel that as we have been living together for a number of years we don't have many household items that we need and our families all know that we have been working towards a homestead. We are able to afford to set up of the farm but felt asking for people to help with certain animals and things like the feeders and tools would make guests feel more of a part of it all than just asking for money. If only half a cow was bought then we would make up the rest of the money to purchase it and send thank you notes along with a photo of the cow we purchased to each person who contributed for that item.

I just wouldn't register and not have a shower since you don't need anything. People will give cash for the wedding and you can spend that however you'd like.

I am apparently in a vast minority about this, but I think it sounds AWESOME.

I would 100% ask after the Chicken I bought you for your wedding, and I'd be way more thrilled then if I was getting you a toaster or a pizza stone.

I wish I had more advice on how to do a registry for this, seems like a good way to do it would be through Zola or Amazon. I haven't used Zola, but on amazon we can list things that amazon doesn't offer.

I too think this is a cool idea and would be delighted to contribute to a sheep if I was a guest! As its a homestead farm rather than a commercial farm, I see it as helping to build your home the same way a new bedspread or set of dishes would. Sorry I have no suggestions for how to set it up, just wanted to tell you I appreciate your creativity and would be the opposite of bothered by this registry.

I would so contribute to a cow! I love the idea but like others I have no clue as to where to start. Also sending a picture of the animal is super sweet and would make me feel apart of your daily lives 😊

You could register for the supplies and then just do a money registry and tell people that the money will be going towards the new additions to your farm. I think this is awesome!

I'm right there with you on this.

I would absolutely be tickled pink to buy someone a chicken or sheep. In my mind, since it's a homestead farm, I see no difference between buying something that will provide eggs or buying something that will cook eggs.

I think with Zoola, you can choose to buy multiple items so someone could purchase 2 $25 chickens for example. The Knot has a Newlywed Fund, where you can set up something similar. Keep in mind, both charge a fee since they take credit cards. Could you register on Amazon too so people have the option for a traditional registry? We have a small Amazon registry, it has accessories for our dog and our chickens. Amazon has a lot of ag related items.

As a full-on city girl this sounds so foreign and yet totally amazing to me!!! If I chip in for a chicken can the chicken write me a letter every six months and let me know what's up in Chicken Land? Or can there be a Facebook page for people who donated where all of the animals take turns writing?
Seriously I think that's a fabulous idea to set up a homestead. In the capacity that a registry is meant to help the bride and groom or bride and bride or groom and groom establish their home if you guys have all the inside stuff and you're not selling the eggs and the milk and what not you're just trying to provide for your family ... this is beautiful.

I agree, as a guest I’d be thrilled to help friends with livestock and related gifts.

Such a cool idea. As a guest I'd be more delighted to gift you something for your homestead than I would towels. We are also into homesteading like you are and I found that Amazon is very useful. You can register for chickens from hatcheries just by pushing the Amazon wish list button on your web browsers bar. You can add the tool in the Amazon app or on the site. We registered for various items such as canning items on our registry and seeds for the garden. I also put Tractor Supply gift cards on our list. I come from a very rural community that will be thrilled we are into living off the land. I grew up on a farm were most of the food came from our farm and I'm looking to get back to that. You could put a milk churn on your list and cheese making items. One of the things on our list is a tomato juicer. For the livestock I'd do a money registry and let guests know that's were the money is going. During my search for a registry I actually looked for a registry that is more homestead or farming related but couldn't find one . I think Amazon comes the closest as it's kind of universal.
