Local food and drink

Laura, on June 10, 2019 at 5:49 PM Posted in Michigan Planning 0 7

Are any of you planning to have any local or Michigan centric food and drinks at your reception? Since it's fall when my wedding is happening i'm probably going to have some apple cider and cinnamon powdered doughnuts. We all know that's big here in the fall. I may give mini apple pies as favors too. What about you?

Thank you! A few of our guests are coming from out of state, so I want to share with them some of what I love about Michigan

Are you getting the cider and/or donuts from a local cider mill, or are you purchasing from like a grocery store? I absolutely LOVE Yates' donuts, can't wait for fall!

Probably the cider mill if i'm able to get enough. I live closer to Apple Charlie's so i'll probably go there. I love fall and so does my FH and we really wanted to have the special foods from then

I can count our guests who have even been to Michigan on one hand, so I feel you. We're getting married in Detroit, and using the city as our theme.

    So here's our food/drink offerings:

    At the reception:

We're doing a Coney Dog bar as a late-night snack, and we're working with our venue to expand our Michigan beer options at the bar (examples, if you need them: Atwater, Founders, Bells, Arbor Brewing Company, Odd Side Ales).

We'll be toasting with Leelanau Cellars (Omena) champagne and St. Julian (Paw Paw) sparkling grape juice.

Our wedding cake will be Bill Knapps (Battle Creek) celebration cakes, which you can buy at Kroger.

    In the hotel welcome bags:

    - Meijer water (Grand Rapids)

    - Cans of Faygo pop (Detroit)

    - Old Orchard (Sparta) juice boxes for the kiddos

    - Michigan apples

    - Kars nuts (started in Detroit, now headquartered in Madison Heights)

    - Better Made chips (Detroit)

    - Little Kellogg's (Battle Creek) cereal boxes for the kids

    - POSSIBLY Sander's chocolate bars (started in Detroit, then bought by Morley, which is headquartered in Clinton Township). Those are fairly expensive, though, so it's going to depend on how cheaply I get the other items.

If you're not doing welcome bags, you can probably set out dishes with the chips and nuts on the tables.

    Other Michigan-based foods:

    Dave's Toffee (Harrison Township)

    Bigby Coffee (East Lansing)

    Domino's Pizza (Ann Arbor)

    Towne Club pop (Detroit)

    Little Caesar's Pizza (Detroit)

That sounds amazing! I have been looking around for local things in the Downriver area where I live. I have a friend who owns a liquor store and he says he may have some recommendations for me too

Ah, downriver. I lived there for years. For the sake of this list, I'm incuding Dearborn, even though it's not usually considered part of downriver. Some ideas:

    - Shish Garden in Woodhaven is delicious Lebanese food on a budget. You can buy their hummus and garlic paste by the gallon, and bags of their pita bread, which you could totally dole out on tables.

    - Dearborn is a treasure trove of amazing food. Shatila Bakery and New Yesmen Bakery are both on Warren, and have Arabic desserts that are to die for.

    Alcohol:

    Dearborn Brewing - Dearborn

    Downey Brewing Company - Dearborn

    Modern Craft Wine - Wyandotte

Sports Brew Pub in Wyandotte brews their own beer, but I'm not sure if you can buy it by the bottle, or if it's only available on tap.

I don't know which liquor store your friend owns, but I can say Vreeland Market in Woodhaven has practically everything. They can probably help you out. They used to have some great policies on buying liquor for parties and weddings, too. I think they worked on a deposit system which allowed them to take back unopened bottles. Not sure if they still do that, though.
