Logistics of diy Appetizers, etc.

Hi there!
We are planning a wedding with an expected 150 guests. We are trying to stick to our budget and stay as frugal, but also as practical, as possible, by doing what we can ourselves. I have been thinking about the idea of creating my own appetizers (caprise skewers, pinwheels, things like that), but am having a hard time thinking through how this would work the day of. Has anyone done this before, and if so, how did you handle set-up without a hired staff? I know it is probably a better idea to go with the appetizers from my caterer, but just checking all the options first. Smiley smile We were thinking about doing a coffee and donut bar at the end of the night as well, but are running into the same question of who would set this up and how. Sorry if these are silly questions, but I really appreciate your help! Thanks in advance!

Most everyone will say - do not DIY food for your wedding. Especially for 150 people!!! You’ll be cooking for weeks, potentially cross contaminate food, run out of fridge space, have no time to get ready and enjoy your day... just pay for the cheapest catered meal you can find.

Of course. I think if there’s one area to spend money - it’d be food 😊

First, I would ask your caterer if they would even be okay with this. The only outside food we were allowed to have were pre-packaged favors and a cake as long as it came from a licensed bakery. A lot of catering companies don’t want the liability of serving food they haven’t prepared. If you really want to do this, and I’d caution you to rethink just because 150 is a TON of people, I’d keep it super simple. Veggie and fruit trays and then cheese and crackers. Anything beyond that could take days to put together and then you’ll have to find a way to store it all, transport it safely to the venue and find someone to serve.

Definitely hire a caterer. It’s not worth it to DIY for so many negative reasons that you don’t want on your wedding day.

Find a cheaper meal option! We are using a bbq place who has amazing catering packages and for 120 people the cost is HALF what it was gonna be with a wedding caterer. Look into restaurants that cater in your area and go from there!

We did this for apps since we had a very short cocktail hour. We made some skewers and pinwheels and fruit/cheese trays the day before, labeled each tray and where it should go and stored them at the venue (we had access a full day prior). The day of, my H's aunts (who were very eager to help with something) set them out like 10 minutes before people arrived. That said, it was time consuming to MAKE enough things. My mom wanted to do it that way, so we did, but I think she would have been happier in the end of we had had fewer options and had the caterers do it.

For my wedding ceremony we had a social hour after and we actually did it ourselves!

my mother in law and her church ladies made most of the food, bought fruits, and ordered egg rolls. and we cold brewed the drinks ourselves.

i honestly didn't care cause my mother in law wanted to take charge so i honestly didn't do a single thing and it came out nicely. basically the church ladies and my bridal party set up the tables.

i do see what everyone means though by saying don't DIY it because it's more to add onto your plate so you can just do something simple like fruits and store bought stuff.

Yea, absolutely don't do this. The liability you'll take upon yourself if someone got hurt/sick from this is huge. It's also a huge time suck like PPs have mentioned.

When working as a wedding coordinator one of the venues I worked at did allow self-catering. It was always a hot mess and the people in charge complained and wished they'd just hired a caterer.

A good point is that your caterer for your meal may (likely) not allow this.

I know it seems like a great cost cutting idea, but when you think of how much money you'll spend in ingredients, and time you'll spend making them you're almost always actually more cost effective going through the caterer.

Thanks everyone! I totally agree that if there is an area that is worth the cost, it’s food. We have found a place that is fairly affordable, so we will most likely be going with them for dinner and appetizers. I really appreciate your input!
