Long distance planning

Karisa, on January 12, 2021 at 10:25 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 10

Hey everybody, my fiancé and I are long distance about a 22 hour drive apart. Anyways I will be moving to his town right after we get married and I will not be taking any furniture so its just decorations, rugs, personal items, kitchen items ect. My question is this do y'all have any ideas on a way to move all that stuff without renting a moving truck? or a Pod because they're so expensive and it seems silly to spend that much when I can fit a lot of it in my car?

It is possible to drive to vehicles and load some stuff in his vehicle as well? Do you have any family or close friends that live near his town that would be willing to help take some stuff as well?

Well the problem is him and all of his family live 22 hours away. So with him only getting a couple weeks off work for the wedding a two day drive and all those miles on his vehicle just don't seem worth it. And as far as family I'm sure we could talk one of them into it but it just doesn't seem fair to ask someone to make a 40 plus hour drive.

I gotcha. I'll keep thinking of options, but a U-Haul or Pod are all I can think of that would work in your situation.

Uhaul has small containers you can attach to a ball hitch for a little bit of extra space. Also invest in spacebags, for clothes and blankets it really saves a ton of space when moving. Other than that you could ask a friend or family to drive up with you so you can pack some stuff in their car too.

I recommend that you sell or donate as many items as you can. Wil your fiancé be visiting you anytime between now and the wedding? If so, then he should probably take some of items that tou don't use everyday back with him.

I live 100 miles away (much closer, I know) from my FH and I've already started moving my things, little by little to his place. I don't plan on taking any furniture with me either.

We've recently moved 1500 miles, so about a 22 hour drive. I understand about no one really wanting to do that kind of drive more than they have to. I think it really depends on how much you absolutely HAVE to bring with you. If it won't fit in your car, then I'd probably consider the smallest POD. They are pretty expensive (especially if you are moving from a place a lot of people are leaving and going to a place lots of people are moving to -- we found there were absolutely premiums for those characteristics), but we found it super convenient and no one has to drive a truck or pull a trailer. If it's only a small amount of stuff beyond what will fit in your car, you might look into boxing it up and sending it via a freight carrier like UPS or through the airlines. Another option might be to book a flight to the new location in the coming months and then take as much as you can with you as checked and carry-on luggage. Southwest allows you two checked bags for free (up to 100 lbs combined). When a family member moved, a couple of us flew to the new location to help and took a lot of clothes, linens, etc., in our luggage. Other than that, I'd probably be ruthless about what you take. If transporting stuff is going to cost more than its financial value, you might be better off selling or donating your stuff and buying new after you move. Good luck! Moving is a hassle whether it's across the country or across the street!

EDT: We had both a large POD and a large U-haul. When you're considering and pricing options, keep in mind that with driving you'll also have costs associated with gas (we got about 10 mpg with the U-haul...so, a LOT of gas...), food and lodging on the road. With a POD, you'll have one fixed cost. You'll still have the expenses of driving your car, but for moving your stuff you'll know exactly what it will cost once you have your confirmed reservation with the POD company. (Also, POD has a military discount, so if that applies to you or your FH be sure to ask for it -- I think it was 10% and applies to veterans as well as active duty.)
