Long vs Short Bridesmaid Dresses? Groomsmaid attire?

Elaine, on November 5, 2017 at 5:48 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 14

I’m really back and forth about whether to have my bridesmaids wear long or short dresses...We’re getting married at the end of June in the late afternoon in Southern California. It will likely be in the 80s, and the ceremony is outside in the shade, with the reception both outside and inside (but not air conditioned, it’s in a converted barn and surrounding gardens). The wedding is semiformal, so I’m torn between whether short looks too casual and long looks too formal. I want my bridesmaids to be comfortable, but I’m honestly not sure how much of a temperature difference long vs short makes when the dresses are a lightweight chiffon. I also am not making them purchase matching shoes, just something they own in similar colors. I really can’t decide what would be best!

Also, on a semi related topic, we have one groomsmaid on my FH’s side. We can’t decide if it would look best for photos if she were to wear the BM dress (purple) or a dress in the same color as the GM’s tuxes (grey).

I think there are other factors that are more important than long or short for comfort level. The fabric will affect them more. Cheap polyester chiffon will be hot. Silk chiffon which is a natural fabric, can breathe and will be a lot cooler.

I would have the groomswoman wear the same color as the groomsmen- whether that is a dress or something else of her choosing- a jumpsuit, pantsuit etc.

I’m ordering the dresses from Azazie...not sure if the chiffon is polyester or silk. There are other fabric options, like charmeuse, tulle, and jersey, but I figured chiffon was the lightest and had the most dress options.

Short! I'm getting married in July and would never expect my girls to wear floor length dresses. My mom ordered a cocktail length dress as well.

ETA: saw your update. Get samples from Azazie. I believe everything is mostly polyester. I would pick something short with a flowing skirt so there's a little room to breathe.

@BoudreauToBe thanks! I ordered swatches but it’s so hard to get a sense of weight and flow without holding the actual garment. I was leaning short for the temperature and comfort factor...but if they’re not wearing matching shoes, would that be distracting? I’m having them pick something they already own in a similar color like nude. I don’t want to make them buy matching shoes, etc since I already feel buying a dress is enough of a monetary commitment to ask from them!

@muriel thanks for the advice! Definitely leaning towards having the groomsmaid match the GMs vs the BMs in terms of color.

I think short would be more comfortable

    Date twin!!

I asked my bridesmaids what they would prefer. They chose to have their legs covered due to being in pictures that many people will see. Your best bet might be to ask your girls what they would prefer

I'm getting married in July in Southern California and having my girls do short dresses. I'm also having them wear cowboy boots so that played a big factor but since it'll be hot, I wouldn't want them to be miserable.

@Megan, I thought about asking but I’m afraid they won’t all agree! I might just have to ask, though, since I care more about their comfort versus long/short looks wise. It doesn’t really matter to me!

Short dresses. Too hot for any long dress.

@ Elaine- you have time to order sample dresses and check the weight. Women wear maxi dresses all summer so the length is not as big a factor as some might think.

I wore a long chiffon dress from azazie and hated it. I was so fucking hot. At the reception I just tied it in a knot above my knees.

@muriel, good to know they do samples! I’ll order a sample and check them out for myself.

@mkebride that’s so helpful, glad to hear how they felt from someone who’s actually worn one!

My girls wore short dresses and silver shoes they already owned, if the shoes are the same color, you really don't notice that they are different in pictures. I also think that, depending on the color, short dresses can still look formal, mine certainly did and were navy blue
