Longest married dance?

bridetobe, on March 23, 2016 at 10:07 PM

We are thinking of doing a special dance for the longest married couple. The DJ is going to ask all the married couple to get up and ask people who have been married 5 years or less to move back, 10 years or less do the same and so on. Anyone else doing it? What do we think about it?

We're thinking a dance for those with the same anniversary month as our wedding. It'll be at least 4 couples, I think.

I'm really not a fan of this dance, but that's because I have multiple guests who either recently separated (my parents) or just lost their spouse (FH's grandma). It's a sweet idea, but know your guests. It can bring up a lot of painful memories and thoughts for some.

We're doing it! I love this at weddings and insisted on it. Plus, it will be a week before my grandparents 60th anniversary, so I'm thinking of something special to give them.

I hate this. Takes up too much time and your unmarried guests really don't care to watch these people dance. Not a fan of any dances that exclude people (ie. single/divorced/widowed).

To echo tjacob, I went to a wedding where the couple who would have had the longest marriage, the husband passed away a few months earlier. People were trying to tell the wife to stand anyways bc her marriage was still the longest but she didn't want to and it was all just really sad. So yeah, know your guests

I love this! I think my aunt and uncle will be the longest (at 35 years) so I'll play their song, "We've Only Just Begun".

I love this and we're definitely doing it at the wedding. I've seen brides give their bouquet to the longest couple. We have the same friend group and fiance's best friend's parents win every time (40+ years) lol.

We did this at my wedding. We used through the years by Kenny Rogers and the couple that was married the longest got my bouquet instead of doing a bouquet toss. We also had the longest married couple give a piece of advice at the end. It was very sweet and the guests liked it.

We are doing that and giving the bouquet and garter to the last couple up there!

ETA: My father died and my mom thinks this is a great idea, so I am not sure why you wouldn't do it if someone died. That seems kind of silly to me.

I did this!! It's called an anniversary dance and it was a huge hit with my guests as a majority of them are married. They danced to "Our Love Is Here to Stay" by Frank Sinatra. I didn't want to do a bouquet toss so the toss bouquet went to the "winner", which just so happened to be our officiant and his wife. Smiley smile

I've seen this done before, and usually they get the toss bouquet in lieu of doing the bouquet toss. I like it a lot. I didn't do it for my own though because I knew it would be my parents and I didn't know if that would look weird.

We're doing this and giving them the bouquet. But I love the idea of having them share their 'secret'. Totally stealing that! I'm also excited because I genuinely have no idea who it will be.

@OriginalLaura, people handle things differently. Your mom is a strong woman, but I don't think it's out of the ordinary for someone whose spouse just recently died to be sad because they can't stand up and dance with their deceased or otherwise sick spouse when other couples are called to.

I always enjoy this, we're usually toward the end with 44 years. And I love Through the Years, but Kimi that is SO sweet!

I think the idea is very sweet! My only problem would be rubbing salt in the wound of the elderly that are widows/widowers. I may be being too sensitive idk but both the couple I know that deserve the honor lost a spouse recently. What about having wedding pictures of parent, grandparents, and aunts/uncles?

I want to do this! I don't really have many single friends left (neither does my fiance). It doesn't really make sense for us to do a Bouquet Toss.

We're going to. Pretty sure it's gonna be FH's grandparents. Might have a flower arrangement made for the final couple

I did this, our guest loved it. We didn't do a bouquet toss so we gave the couple the toss bouquet.

We are considering doing this in place of the garter belt and giving the bouquet to the last couple standing.
