Losing Weight is Hard - Venting

I never had a weight problem as a kid. I ate what I wanted, wasn't very active, and I was skinny as can be. Then my thyroid decided it was done working and I gained 40+ lbs in a year. I've struggled ever since. I've worked hard about being kind to myself through it all, which it really hard for me....
I never had a weight problem as a kid. I ate what I wanted, wasn't very active, and I was skinny as can be. Then my thyroid decided it was done working and I gained 40+ lbs in a year. I've struggled ever since. I've worked hard about being kind to myself through it all, which it really hard for me.

My engagement photos, while still gorgeous, made me feel fat and brought back all the self hate that I've worked so hard to get past. I'm watching what I eat and doing my best to be more active. I signed up for a weight management program offered through work and I'm struggling. I'm down a measly 3 lbs and we're in week 10 of the program. The other participants have lost 10+ lbs and are super motivated as a result.

I've considered quitting this program and signing up for Weight Watchers. The $20 a month is a bit steep, but I know several people that have had a ton of success on it. While I weigh the pros and cons, I'm following as much as I can without actually signing up for the program. I have a list of 0 point foods and I keep a stash at work (carrots, celery, apples, oranges...) I stay away from sugar and only drink water or hot tea (no sugar added). I eat a healthy, balanced diet that follows all the guidelines of the weight management program.

Every time I have a good week and lose another pound, I end up gaining it all back the next week. It's frustrating and depressing.

Here I am, snacking on celery, AKA flavorless water sticks, and a coworker stops by my desk... "I know you're on a diet, but would you like a piece of chocolate to go with your celery?" ....she means well, I know, but I want to scream. Do I WANT it, yes. I ALWAYS want chocolate. That's a stupid question. ....but I didn't take it. And THAT made me proud of myself. I'm still grumpy and hungry, but I feel good knowing that I made at least one good decision today.

Speak with your dietician and they can help you get on track and stay on it, only you can keep yourself motivated. I’ve been on Keto for a few months and I’ve lost roughly about 15 lbs, and it isn’t all that bad! If you’re interested, do a little bit of research to start you off. Smiley smile

Keep that determination up and keep going! Good luck!

Whatever it's worth, you're doing a great job sticking to it. If you're interested, send me a message. I lost 40 lbs in 5 months (2 years ago) and have maintained at +15 lbs since. I have restarted this diet in order to lose that 15 lbs that my body had held onto in order to be back at my goal weight by the wedding. I had gained 50 lbs in 9 months when I started working night shift and felt out of control. I can guide you and help motivate you to lose the weight that you struggle with. My support system was a facebook group that I found and my co-workers, who could see my transformation even before I could. I have before and after pics too if you would like to see them Smiley smile keep pushing forward- I've always been reminded that weight is only a number. If you track your progress in inches, you'll be able to see greater results!

I've had problems with my weight my entire life. I've tried programs like weight watchers and 21 day fix, but nothing has really worked for me to keep the weight off. My diet is pretty healthy. I haven't lost weight, but my body is definitely getting toned by going to the gym and walking a lot. The other day when I went to the doctor I was asking him about it. He suggested that I keep doing what I am doing, but also try to relax more with yoga and massages. He said with all of the changes going on in my life (even the good stress) that cortisol levels go up which prevents people from losing weight. I'm going to try this and see if it works for me!

I can really sympathize with you. I have PCOS which makes it harder to lose weight. After seeing several friends diet to lose weight for their wedding and gain it all back not too long after, I would say that your best tool is self-acceptance. If you are eating vegetable and lean protein forward meals, avoiding alcohol and sugar, and working up a sweat an hour a day, you're probably going to be the weight that your body wants you to be, even if it's not exactly what you would like it to be. My personal advice is that if you put yourself in the mindset of "I'm going to be healthy so I can share a long and healthy life with my love" you're going to be a lot less stressed and enjoy life more than all of the mental and emotional energy that diet programs require. I think wedding planning can distort your self-image. I saw my gorgeous, athletic cousin go on a liquid diet trying to lose five more pounds the week before her wedding and fret about her arms looking fat in photos (she was drop dead gorgeous and had nothing to worry about.) If your dress is a flattering style for your shape and you have a hairstyle and makeup you love, you are going to look gorgeous and I hope you can embrace yourself in this moment!

I completely understand this! Ive been dieting since January and I lost a good amount but for the past month I've been stagnant which is really making me struggle. But I started at the gym Monday so hopefully I'll get back on track... Have you tried exercising more? I also suggest measuring yourself. You may not be losing many lbs but you could be losing inches!

    I totally hear your struggle!!!!

Just wanted to send a note that I have been on Weight Watchers for a few years (joined after my Dad passed away) and I really love the program. It's been so helpful for me in changing my mindset and I love going to meetings because it's a reminder that you're not alone in a weight struggle!

I think the hardest part about losing weight is being motivated to workout, while not over doing it where you get burnt out.

Some things I found that worked for me:

    - Tell people, have some accountability.

    - Make sure you are doing it for the right reasons... I want to be healthier, I want to feel more energized. Not I hate how I look.

    - Workout first thing in the morning. It's easier to do it and get it over with.

    - Cut out soda pop and drink a LOT of water.

I used Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred workout dvd that was maybe $8. It really worked! I did all the things I mentioned above along with the DVD (approx. 30 mins each morning) and I lost 40 lbs in 6 months.

You can do this! Good luck.
