losing weight on birth control

tianna, on December 11, 2016 at 5:47 PM Posted in Fitness and Health 0 17

I wanna start losing weight for my wedding in December of next year but i've been having such a hard time. I've been on birth control for about 2 years (implant in my arm) and I've gained about 20-30 pounds & it's always been extremely hard to lose the weight. Does anyone have any tips for what I can do to try to knock some of this off? I know some people say not to blame birth control for weight gain but during my senior year when i first got put on I was very active. I played soccer year round, ran track, and hard a normal diet, nothing too bad & still gained a lot of weight. Just really need some tips because I wanna look my best for my big day!

Definitely consult your doctor since everyone's metabolism is different. I am in a similar boat and am trying to watch my portion sizes (I eat pretty healthy, I just eat wayyy too much!). The only thing that has helped me lose weight in the past is running. I'm starting to get back into it so I hope that's still my fix!

FH and I started using LoseIt. It's an app that's legit just tracking calories. I've lost 10lbs and FH has lost 20(in half the time it's taken me to lose the 10)

I just stopped my birth control and the weight is coming right off. I knew I was having a hard time because of stupid birth control too but I tried to convince myself it wasn't. I've lost 4 lbs since stopping 2 weeks ago! And I feel a lot better too. Now we've just got to be super careful lol

What type of BC are you on? Estrogen? Combo? Progestin?

I second what OG Alecia said. It sounds like there's something else going on. I'd go to your doctor and ask their thoughts. It could be a hormonal thing and you need to try another type of BC that involves a different hormone than you're on now.

In the meantime, don't give up on diet and exercise. It's better to do something than nothing. Keep at it and see your doctor about other options for BC.

Thank you all for your advice! I will definitely talk to my doctor and see what she says, and I will continue to stay active!

@tianna, yes, definitely speak to your doctor! I, personally, can't take estrogen-based birth control because it severely messes with my moods; I'm talking I would sob hysterically if the cat looked at me funny. I went off BC for four years and my mood was much, much better. When I decided to go back on BC, I spoke to my doctor about my experience, and I found out my body is estrogen-dominant; the additional estrogen really threw my body out of whack. I'm now on a progestin-based BC and there's no major changes at all. Bodies are funky sometimes; you sometimes have to play around with things to find something that works best for you. Good luck!

I have the nexplanon too and I have gain 30 pounds since being on it. I thought I wouldn't have gained any weight because before this I was on the pill for 10years. I am going to get it taken out in January and ask to go on a low dose pill for now.

@kristina That's what i've been thinking about doing as well! When you were on the pill did you gain any weight? I know everyone is different but how was your experience on the pill?

I loved being on the pill. I mean I gained some weight but it was easier to diet and exercise to loose weight. I've tried everything to try to loose weight with the implant. It's just frustrating.

@kristina I completely agree! I try so hard to lose weight with the implant and it just doesn't come off! I'm gonna talk to my doctor and express to her my concerns with not being able to lose weight with the implant and get on the pill instead. Also when it's "that time of the month" for me it lasts about 3 weeks!

Diet and excersice! There's also a drink called "plexus" or some people call it "the pink drink", which curves your appetite. I use it once a day and it really works! You pour the powder in a water bottle and drink it 30mins before a meal (I do it with lunch)

I really didn't know that it was a myth that bc causes weight gain. All of the bc I have used before stated weight gain as a side effect. I got the depo shot before leaving the hospital after having my first son. I was breast feeding so I lost the 30 lbs of pregnancy weight I had gained in like 3 weeks. But the shot killed my milk supply and the weight started to come back on. I think I gained almost 50lbs in the 9 months after my first some was born. I stopped the shot and I didn't lose but I stopped gaining.

As for weight loss, I have a couple friends that have been successful with the shakeology and 21 day fix.

I don't recommend this but for short term loss you can ask your dr for an appetite suppressor, and follow a strict diet of 20 grams of protein 5x's a day, no white foods(bread, cereal, rice, carbs), and only carbs from veggies, and eat full fat versions of things like sour cream and butter of your gonna eat it. And follow a light exercise routine. Not too much because you are not taking in many calories, so you may feel weak and could pass out if you are doing to much strenuous activity.

    Good luck!

I do the 21 day fix, but not the shakes. I just follow the food plan with portion sizes. You get every food group and it helps to teach you the right foods to eat, and how much you can have.

I use Beach Body programs, but I'd suggest you step back and look at your diet. Talk to your doctor like others have suggested and come up with a clean meal plan!
