Low ceilings and ugly floors

Katie B to S, on October 21, 2016 at 12:05 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 11

Our reception space is relatively small, the ceilings are really low, and the floor is this AWFUL dark green and black checkerboard tile, but it's in the same building as the ceremony which, especially for a winter wedding and a small budget, was a huge plus. Any suggestions on how to make the space feel bigger? We can't really hide the floors, but suggestions to draw attention away from them would be nice!

You'll want to keep your guest's eyes on your tables and away from the floors and ceiling. So, I'd focus your time and money there. Consider using mirrors in your decor, that always makes things seem bigger. Lighter colors will brighten the room so think about that with your linen and florals/centerpieces.

And if you have the budget for it, consider talking to a lighting company about spotlights and maybe a color wash to help brighten it all up. They'll be able to give you great suggestions to draw your eye away from what you don't want to see and towards what you do.

I saw an episode of David Tutera where the floors were ugly so he drew the attention up to the ceiling and hung fabric from it to make it interesting. Look up some of his stuff, you may be able to take some of his ideas.

Honestly I would never notice the carpet at a wedding, I wouldn't worry about it!

I don't think you need to do much but good uplighting. The attention will be on you and your FH Smiley smile

Maybe a nice backdrop behind you two if you are doing sweetheart table.

Nobody will notice the floor - it'll be covered with tables and chairs, and they'll have lots of other stuff to look at. Lighting and/or fabric hangings can help with the walls and ceiling. Ask the staff at the venue and your vendors, they'll have lots of ideas and a good idea of price ranges.
