One of our groomsmen just texted FH & said "Just so you know, there's a good chance I won't be able to make it to your wedding. I have a final for my summer class at 4 that day." Should FH ask him to talk with the professor and see if he can take it early, or is that too demanding? Has anyone had any luck moving final exams to fit wedding schedules? I can tell FH is hurt that the friend hasn't really said he'd make an effort to see if he can get it changed. Thoughts? I just know FH will be hurt if one of his closest friends isn't there.

As a prof, if the student was forthcoming early in the semester, I would allow it. As others have said, early contact is best. If he waits until the week before, I'd say no.

I'm a professor in graduate school as well and if asked in advance then I would. I write my tests in pools meaning there are several questions for each content area so therefore not every student will pull the same questions. It certainly wouldn't hurt to ask. Students ask me all the time well in advance and I understand life circumstances.

Getting my Phd now, and teach several classes. If he wants to get it changed, he needs to tell them immediately, in person, and offer to take the final before the original date. That way the prof knows he isn't trying to get extra time to study. I would have no problem doing this for a student, provided that it worked with my travel schedule (remember that fieldwork runs into finals, particularly in the summer), and they gave me notice. Asking last minute shows a lack of responsibility or care.
