Maiden name to middle name Help!

Gina, on February 27, 2020 at 9:20 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 8

Hello everyone I need some help with understanding if I can legally take my maiden name as a second middle name once I'm married. Ill be getting married in Wisconsin but I live in Michigan. I cannot find the laws for either state saying if I can change my name the way I want to. Has anyone done this before in either state?

I think it varies by state but this is what I did in CA. It stated what name changes were acceptable on the marriage license application.

You should call your local magistrate court to be sure but in general, yes you can. My cousin did because she was never given a middle name and didn't want to give up her maiden name.

Are you getting married in Michigan on paper first and then the ceremony in Wisconsin is just a formality?

I think if you're waiting to actually get married in Wisconsin you would get a marriage license in the county where you're getting married in Wisconsin. Just so you know there's a 1 week period from when you apply for the certificate to when you pick it up and can be married in Wisconsin.

Wherever you have the legal marriage taking place, I would call that county's clerk to ask these additional questions. You end up legally changing your name with social security (federal), not state. Then you bring your marriage certificate to DMV, etc.

I’m getting married in Wisconsin and will be getting the Wisconsin marriage certificate. I’ve already called the county clerk of the county I’ll be getting married in and they were not very helpful just told me they don’t handle it.

I think that's because you change your name with social security. I would call there.

Once you are married, and have a certified copy of your marriage license, you can change your name to however you wish. When you go to the social security office, they will ask you how you would like your new name to read. That is how it was done in my state, and how it was done in other states where my friends live. So, I'm assuming that is common.

It varies by state, I would call your local county court office to ask. I'm in Colorado and I changed my maiden name to middle name, and dropped my middle name.

This varies by state. My friend tried to do this in Texas and social security let her but the DMV did not and it was a large headache.
