Maiden Name to Middle Name in pa

Kalyn, on October 14, 2018 at 6:41 PM Posted in Pennsylvania Planning 0 3

Has anyone in Pennsylvania changed their maiden name to their middle name and then taken their husband's last name? I'm having the hardest time with this in PA. My SS card was easy and is done, it's just the driver's license I'm having trouble with. The DMV said I needed to have a judge do it and it might cost $170? Would love advice from someone who has done this.

    Hey there, Kaylyn!

I can certainly see why you're confused by this!! It looks like Pennsylvania doesn't make it super easy to do! I found this comment from a user on Reddit who is going through the last name change/maiden name as middle name change.

"If you are changing your middle name as well, you need to provide the DMV with three forms of ID that show your full new name (first, middle, and last) in order to change the name on your license. Your new SS card counts as one, but your marriage license does not, since it doesn't show your middle name. Additionally, a middle initial doesn't count either - the new middle name has to be written out. What I had to do (still in the process, actually) was change the name on my SS card first, then my passport, then my voter's registration card in order to get the necessary documentation to change the name on my license."

This seems to be in line with everything else I'm reading, but I'd definitely check in with the DMV again to make sure this is correct. The information/articles I'm reading might not have been update if Pennsylvania changed the name changing laws recently!

That sounds about right. I was just reading something about that because I am in the process of changing my name also. It seems to me that I read you need to file a petition to change your name in other circumstances than marriage or divorce. Since you are wanting to change more than your last name, that's probably want they're needing you to do.

Hi Kalyn, have you had any success with your name change? I went through HitchSwitch, and they told me to 1. Get your new SS card, 2. Get new passport, 3. Voter Registration Card, 4. go to the DMV, then change any additional items you have in your name. I'm hoping to have my maiden name my middle name, but I hear some DMV's make it harder then it needs to be. You no longer need to get a court order to change your name.
