Make your own wedding cake?

So I've been looking at different places for my cake and dessert bar and every place is ridiculously expensive for cake. So I've been looking at different places for my cake and dessert bar and every place is ridiculously expensive for cake. The cheapest I have found is 5$ a serving for cake and at the dessert bar prices are even more insane. I am going to have between 125-175 guests and I think 500$ or more for a wedding cake is way to expensive. I am considering making my own wedding cake and desserts for a dessert bar. Has anyone ever done this? Does anyone have any tips?

We're doing a small cutting cake for display , and there will be a sheet cake in the kitchen for everyone else.

    Don't do it.

I've made two wedding cakes for a friend & a cousin and it was a nightmare. Way too much work and stress. I can't imagine doing it for my own wedding.

I contemplated making my own cake. My sister in law bakes beautiful and delicious cakes for her kids birthdays. I ultimately scratched the idea because I didn't want to deal with the potential stress. The next idea I had was to get a couple of already made cakes and put flowers on them to make them "pretty" and then put them on cake stands. I would suggest going with publix, or wegmans or any grocery store cake if you like how they taste.

I do want to add that doing your own desert bar could be fun and less stressful and then you can just make a small cutting cake yourself! If we had gone the cupcake rout..i would have for sure made them myself and took the time to learn how to frost them so theyre pretty. so if you're really wanting to do it yourself..go for it! Take a cake decorating class at joanns to get some experience and it shouldn't be too difficult (for cupcakes).

Don't do this, you will be so stressed! The cake has to be made at the last minute to be fresh and it will be so stressful for you! Just pay the baker. 5.00 a piece is not high for wedding cake! My mom was a professional wedding cake maker and I'm not even having her do mine because of the stress and her health. I'm just paying to get one but I found a baker I really like and trust to do it the way I would want it. I also second the cupcake option , its often cheaper than getting a cake. Or you get a small 8 inch cake to cut and then have cupcakes for the rest.

    Nope. No. Nope.

The liability of food poisoning and the amount of work?

    No.

As PPs suggested, go somewhere like Costco or Sams. Or, forego a cake altogether and have some other type of dessert table.

ETA: the price you got is price friendly in my neck of the woods. We're paying $450, plus delivery, for 75 people. Let them eat cake!

I wanted to make mine as well, my godmother talked me out of it by offering to pay for the cake. I'm glad I don't have the burden of trying to pull it off. Now that I'm in full planning mode it really would be too much.

I would definitely avoid doing this at all costs.
