Makeup Anxiety

Sarah, on September 19, 2019 at 8:50 AM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 9

On a day-to-day basis I do not wear any makeup (but my skincare regimen is 100%). I only wear makeup when I get dressed up. When it comes to photos, I try to avoid the camera lens, as I don't consider myself photogenic. All of a sudden, I am feeling REALLY anxious about my engagement photo shoot, which is on Saturday. I have no idea what to do with my face, or how to do anything trendy/ modern with makeup...

I am planning on going to Sephora this afternoon to refresh my collection. What do I need to add to my shopping list? How do I make myself pretty while still feeling natural? Any help is greatly appreciated!!

If you're planning to go to Sephora anyway, I would consider using their makeup services. The actual application is free as long as you spend $55 on products in the store. If you're buying 2+ items you're probably going to spend that anyway. You could schedule your appointment for Saturday before your shoot!

I felt the same way/ am the same way. I went to Ulta Beauty and had them do my make up. It was definitely more then I normally do but I loved it! I would just do you and not worry about anything! We did our pictures on Monday and I was so nervous. We were just ourselves and went with the flow of things. I didn't pose, fix myself or anything like that before every picture was taken and the sneak peeks that came back look beautiful! I would say, do your normal makeup you wear when you get dressed up and try to focus on your FH during the pictures. Good luck!

I agree with PPs on using Sephora or Ulta's services! I wear makeup daily and have since high school. I've gotten pretty good at doing makeup but that's because I've spent years practicing. Getting an experienced make up artist to do it at one of these stores would be great so you don't have to stress about it. Smiley smile

I second this. You buy makeup you need and get free makeup done. I like them better than Mac and Ulta. Plus Ulta charges more than Sephora and you don’t get makeup for what you pay.

Eh... I don't recommend going with a makeup artist to do your make-up, especially the day-of. If you don't wear a lot of makeup normally, you're really trusting a random makeup artist to do your makeup correctly and hopefully kind of naturally. If they do something not good, you might not have time to fix it the day-of. Sometimes they can go overboard and if you're not used to wearing a lot of makeup, it can be jarring.

If you normally don't wear a lot of makeup, then don't go for something super trendy or unnatural compared to your day-to-day look.

If you have really nice skin (sounds like you do if you have your skincare routine locked down!), then maybe just use a powder mineral foundation if you need one. If you're going to Sephora, go to one of the makeup stations and ask to get color-matched. They'll give you a code that you can type into their iPads and it will tell you all of the foundations and concealers that will match your skin tone. If you don't need foundation, then try going with a light concealer like NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer or YSL's Touche Eclat Radiant Concealer. Set with a little setting powder and you're good to go!

Maybe add some blush and a little bit of bronzer to add color to your face. NARS Orgasm Blush and Laguna Bronzer are supposed to be flattering for most skin tones. Benefit's Hoola Bronzer is also very flattering and comes in a few shades now. Tarte also has some very good long-wearing blushes. If you feel like you need to add a little color to your eyes, you can use the bronzer as a sweep of eyeshadow. If you want to add some glow-y, subtle highlight, I recommend Benefit's Watt's Up or Kevyn Aucoin's Neo Highlighter.

If you want to do anything with your brows, just lightly fill them in with a pencil. NYX Micro Brow Pencil is a good dupe for the Anastasia brown pencils. Just remember to get a pencil that's one shade lighter than your natural brow color for that soft, natural look.

For mascara, I recommend Too Faced Better Than Sex .

Then you probably just need a light lipgloss or lipcolor and you're good to go! I recommend Fenty's Gloss Bomb or Fresh's Sugar Lip Tint.

After reading through the other comments, I am going to have to agree with @yung_coconut

I have never found that the people that work at these counters are very good at listening to exactly what you envision. Their version of natural may be way off from what you were envisioning and you may get stuck with little time to get it redone before your photoshoot.

And personally they have NEVER been good at color matching my skin tone... which is important for pictures! But I have an awkward skin tone too haha

Try getting some products and doing some fun trials at home, maybe even invite a friend that is good at makeup to help you?

Just because you are getting pictures done, doesn't mean you cannot still be you! You don't usually wear makeup, you don't have to go full glam to be confident. You have a beautiful smile and nice eyes and that's all you really need to look good in a photo 🥰

Speak with your photographer! Express that you are feeling a little bit anxious about the photoshoot. The idea is that they will capture some pictures that show your relationship. Focus on your connection with your partner, be in the moment, your anxiety should dissipate! ☺️

If you are feeling nervous about doing your own makeup have one of the ladies at Sephora do it for you. Make an appointment now if you haven’t done so already!

For the pictures try practicing in the mirror with your facial expressions so you feel as comfortable as you can. Try not to think how anxious you are or that you don’t feel photogenic because it will most likely show in the pictures. Focus on you and your fiance

I was the same way, but I ended up doing my own! I wanted to still look myself. I did a heavier look than I normally would, and I think it turned out good.

What I would recommend is having someone at sephora or ulta put lashes on! It can really elevate a makeup look, even if you aren't experienced!
