Makeup artist dilemma?

Marissa, on September 8, 2020 at 9:10 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 19

So I had my second makeup trial about 2 weeks ago. The first trial didn't turn out so well and the artist agreed, that the makeup was a bit too heavy the first round. So I decided to give her a second try.

The second trial ended up going really well and I loved the end result of everything, the face, lashes, blush, brows, it still looked simple and natural, and the makeup enhanced my good features, BUT the only thing I wanted to change is the glitter over the eye shadow. (I am not used to wearing makeup at all, the most I do is my brows and mascara, maybe some gloss haha). When my FH saw it, he loved it too, except he thought that the glitter part was a bit too much, and I agreed. The glitter shadow has "flakes/particles" that I think look too big and felt too much for the natural look, if you know what I mean? Also after looking at the photos, I think the glitter makes my eyes look wrinkly?

So after the trial, I messaged the artist saying that this is the only thing that I want changed, and if I can have a more shimmer shadow, something more subtle. I don't think she ended up understanding what I meant, and essentially told me "no," she "doesn't have anything else that would give more color to my eyes that's subtle," and that "when it comes to weddings, you have to have something a little extra so your eyes don't get washed out from the lights and even the sweat." Yes I understand this and totally agree, but I just wanted something a bit more simple. I want to be comfortable on my day, and I want my FH to like it too. The pop of glitter is pretty, but just wanted a softer pop of glitter/shimmer.

In the end she said that she's sorry if she was coming across as insensitive and that she just doesn't want me to look washed out. I ended up agreeing with her and essentially ended the conversation. I just felt like I couldn't explain any further with what I wanted. Maybe she didn't understand what I was trying to say in the first place?

Maybe I'm making this too much of a big deal and it actually looks really good. Again, I love the end result, just not that glitter part. IDK, should I just leave it alone? I really don't want to find another artist because her rates are really inexpensive, and she was super nice and friendly in person, but after the messages back at forth, the fact that she essentially said "no" to what I wanted, really bothers me. Should I try and ask her again, and try to explain better? Maybe bring my own shimmer shadows to the wedding day, and just tell her to use that instead haha 😅

Here's some photos from after the trial:

I also barely use make up, so I am sticking with natural look make up. Try it! I also had a nightmare with my “save the date” make up artist. She used the wrong tone for my face, I was so shocked when she turned me around to see myself in the mirror. You know what oompa loompa make up look like? Almost like that. Yes, that bad!

Daughter's make-up looked gorgeous both in person and in her 1100+ wedding photos, and her eyes definitely "popped" without a single flake of glitter. I agree it's disturbing that she just dismissed your request. I'm sorry, YOU are the BRIDE, you get what you want -- especially when it comes to your make-up! If you and FH don't like the glitter, please don't agree to it just to not upset the make-up artist. Since she apologized for coming across as insensitive, I'd use that as an opportunity to reopen the conversation. Let her know you appreciate her wanting to make sure you look your best, but you are not comfortable with the glittery shadow. Ask her if you should purchase an alternative, if she doesn't have another shadow that would better suit your preferences. I understand wanting to maintain a good relationship with her, but you also don't want to look back on your photographs and regret being forced into a look you're not comfortable with. Good luck! I think bringing your own shouldn’t be a problem. My makeup artist used a lot of my own makeup, mainly because I broke out pretty bad from the makeup she used on me at the trial (I have pretty sensitive skin). For my eyes she used her own pinkish eyeshadow and a light pinkish glitter shadow that I had.

My makeup was pretty similar to yours and I don’t really ever wear makeup and if I do it’s mainly foundation and a bit of blush. Dressing it up for me is adding some lipstick 😂 I think if she blends the colors a little more I think the glitter won’t stand out as much. If you’d like I can send you a picture of the glittery shadow I have!
Here’s a picture showing what my makeup looked like! (My husband was fixing my necklace)

Well my opinion is that if the only issue have is the glitter then I would honestly just forego it. You should feel confident and happy with your look and I think your makeup looks nice and if I read your post correctly you basically like everything but that. If she is unable to do the Shimmer I feel like a makeup artist should be able to do anything but the takeaway is that her rates are inexpensive and like you said you don't want to find someone else which I don't blame you. Would you be okay if you did not have glitter for the day of?

She should definitely be able to use a different shadow - that’s extra glittery. Look for an urban decay naked pallet- I think they’ll have what you’re looking for.

Oh my gosh! Yes natural is the way to go especially if you're not used to wearing any makeup! When I first saw myself in the mirror with a full face of makeup during my 1st trial, I was also very shocked and kinda felt like a clown haha.

Thank you!!! Yes, I think I will bring my own makeup as well, just in case. And I am going to talk to the makeup artist again.

Congrats on your wedding! You look so pretty! Love your makeup, it's simple and beautiful!

Totally agree! I was pretty shocked when she said, she didn't really have anything else that I can use. I mean she's a makeup artist, she should have several options 🤷‍♀️ haha. But yes, I would be okay if she doesn't use the glitter at all. I did want a bit of shimmer though, so I'm going to ask her if I can bring some of my own shimmer pallets. But if not, I'd be totally fine with just matte shadows.

I think she probably should have deferred to your desires, but I do also get the point she is making. In professional photos over a long day, the color/shimmer she put on you will look pretty subtle. It was nice of her to share her professional opinion, but you should feel happy with your make up no matter what.

Definitely bring some of your own stuff. Maybe you can try it at home and your fiance can take some pictures of you in the different eye shadows so you can see which one you want to use for the big day.

I would bring your own. I guess I can say this having always been the only black bridesmaid but you would be surprised how many MUA cater to certain skin tones or looks. I always had to pay more for airbrush because they did not have my tone in regular foundation. That was a huge factor when choosing my HMUA was that the company dealt with people of all colors. My HMUA was Dominican but she does white, black, Indian, etc...brides and has different tones and shades for all which I liked.

Oh wow, so you are more likely to find a shade that matches your skin tone in airbrush rather than regular foundation?

It is interesting. I just think they do not carry that tone in regular but for some reason one lady had it in airbrush. I wonder because it does not spoil quicker? I like airbrush but since my HMUA has my tone in a normal foundation and it seemed to hold up well I am gonna save $20 and use that lol.

It's YOUR day, and in the end it's about what you want and feel comfortable with, not the MUA's personal tastes or style. I agree that overall the makeup looks great but the shimmer feels like a bit too much for someone who isn't usually a sparkle and glitter type, plus this particular eyeshadow has larger flakes of glitter (vs subtle shimmer) and is more difficult to apply in a way that doesn't crease and make your eyelids look wrinkly, as you say.

It is not that hard to find eyeshadow without large specks of glitter and any good MUA should be able to make your eyes pop without it. Here she'd just need to use a lighter, similar color in a matte finish or with a subtle sheen. If she isn't receptive to hearing your concerns, then I'm not sure it's an MUA I'd really want doing makeup for my wedding. I'd give her a few days to cool down as it sounds like she took your critique a little too personally and reacted negatively at first, but realized it and is trying to work with you so you're happy. Then I'd reach back out and say you really love everything except the shimmer, and understand she's a professional and has experience doing makeup but you really just don't feel comfortable being so glittery. Your comfort and confidence should come first, as you feeling amazing on your big day is going to impact how you look and how your photos come out a lot more than some eyeshadow.

For what it's worth, I did my own makeup for my Covid minimony and it was pretty subtle but the photos came out great. I most certainly didn't have as much eye makeup as in these photos, and I'm super fair skinned, but I don't think I look washed out or ghostly at all.

There's definitely makeup out there that fits what you're asking for - shimmer, instead of glitter. Maybe she misunderstood? If I were you, I think I'd try talking to her about it again with photos along the lines of what you're looking for (a Google image search for "shimmery eye shadow" or some variation of that should get you plenty), and see if that helps. I also wanted to keep my makeup pretty natural-looking, and my HMUA used a Charlotte Tilbury eyeshadow palette that I loved - here are the photos from my trial, if that gives you a helpful comparison. Good luck!
