Makeup artist not 100% reliable

Madeline, on September 18, 2019 at 7:34 AM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 10

(This is a long one lol) So I’m getting married in two weeks ahhh I’m so excited! But also very stressed with everything thats happening 😣Anyways, I let the hair and makeup girls know about the start time that we have to start to get ready and the time we have to done by (start time 10am) and (be done by 1pm) we are very small wedding party, three total including myself. The hair girl is no problem she said she is ok with the time on the other hand the girl that doing my makeup she send me a text saying that she wasn’t sure about the time and she needed to check if the time didn’t interfere with her other clients, she never communicated that she had other clients at around that time so I was caught off guard by her response..I texted her back saying that I need to know ASAP because my wedding is in two weeks and that I thought I had made the deposit to reserve the day, I also did mention to her after my trial that for sure the start time was morning time, the other issue is that we do not have a contract and I know if she decides she can say she is not coming at the last moment...she hasn’t responded back to my text and I don’t know if I should hope that she can make it or if she does for her to be rushing to get to the other clients. I don’t know why but I always had a bad gut feeling about her and now I know why 😣As soon as I read her text I started to look and email other makeup artist and I did find one girl that I really like her work and she is available (which is crazy because my wedding is in 2 weeks) but I’m not sure if I should just go ahead and cancel with the other girl and hire the new girl...Please give me your suggestions Sorry such a. Long story I needed to vent a little...

I would give her until end of day today and then if I didn’t hear back from her I would hire the other person....and I would text her and tell her that’s your plan. Good luck

This situation mirrors my own so much! My wedding is in 3 weeks and my makeup artist, who I booked via a deposit back in March, contacted me via text saying that she was now double booked and couldn't do my wedding. Mind you when I originally booked her she was available for my date. She never gave me a contract so when she decided to take this other client's wedding (aka bigger wedding party so more money) there was nothing I could do. I immediately started looking for other makeup artists and reaching out to them. Given the time crunch, there's not much time to do makeup trials and explore options.

I say you should go ahead and start reaching out to other makeup artists, especially since you have such a limited amount of time before the wedding. Firstly, you shouldn't have to worry about the artist not giving her best effort or rushing so she can service other clients that same day. Secondly, her inability to confirm her availability for the time you requested is a red flag. Good luck and I hope it works out for you!

Oh no I’m sorry that you are going through the same thing! Yes that’s the only thing about not having a contract it very unreliable because you never know what can happen and they don’t feel as responsible because their is no contract to hold them accountable! And yes I’m kinda feeling bad for some reason about canceling even though I know shouldn’t because she is not being reliable about being there. Hopefully everything works out for you! Keep me updated to see how everything goes hun!

I was in a similar situation when I did my bridal portraits. My HAMU person cancelled on me after I had already paid the deposit and then come the day of she became very rude and tried to keep my deposit and say I was the one who cancelled. Lucky for me she had referred me to a fellow HAMU friend who was able to do my appointment and also transferred the deposit to her. My new HAMU person had my wedding day available so I cancelled with the original girl since the wedding deposit had not been made just to have a peace of mind about the wedding day.

I agree with this. It would also worry me that she didn't reserve the whole morning for you since that is common for wedding day makeup.

Yes that’s the one thing that concerns she never communicated that she had another event the same day and apparently very close in time.. she did reach out to me just a moment ago and she said that she was going to “try” to change the time but that we were going to be short on time 🙄

If she intended to book multiple jobs in one day, she really should have confirmed times before she accepted additional gigs. It's not uncommon for MUAs to have multiple jobs, but it is unprofessional to not schedule them properly. Personally, I would just tell her that you really don't feel comfortable with the time crunch and that you will be going with someone else. There's no contract, so you can get out of it just as easily as the MUA can. Keep us posted!

I had a similar situation with a photgrapher though! The one I was going to hire did not have a contract. She ended up having some life events happen, and didn't respond to my messages after a while. So I decided to do some research and seeing that you should have a contract with all vendors, I let her know that something had come up (we had to move our date out further) and then she responded with okay! and that was it. nothing in response to my questions i had for her and such. So I immeditely started looking for other photographers. I have a meeting with one next week, but had a meeting with one last week and it was one of the best meetings I have had.

    Hope that helps at all!
