Makeup Deposit/cancellations

Michele, on November 27, 2018 at 5:05 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 8
I don’t know much about makeup and makeup services for a wedding so I wanted to run this by others to see if this is typical. I found a professional makeup artist with a reasonable price, good reviews, and her work looks good. I live out of town from where I’m getting married and decided not to do a trial. I asked my 4 bridesmaids if they want their makeup done (at their expense) and they all do. The thing is that the makeup artist wants a 30% deposit for the full bridal party (myself and the bridesmaids) to reserve the date and time. This will be in addition to a signed contract. But the contract also states that if any bridesmaids cancel after the contract is signed and deposit is paid then the remaining balance is still due in full. Are other people’s contacts with their makeup artist this way?

A deposit is 100% necessary, people cancel and that takes away from money that could be made. Are you traveling to her or will she be coming to you? If she is coming to you I can understand that bc a lot of people won't travel for anything less than 4 girls and in the end might not be worth her time/money? But if you are going to her I don't see why that would be necessary.

My deposit was $100 for our hair and makeup artist. We are planning on 13 women getting hair & makeup, so it'll cost $2,200. I'm giving her the final headcount 3 months out though, then I have to pay that amount regardless. Our deposit goes towards our final payment.

We did have to give a 30% deposit BUT the deposit is counted towards the day of balance. A deposit that is IN ADDITION to the contract fee isn’t actually a deposit....

Requiring a deposit is good business because there are SO many people who book services like that and then flake out. So theb the artist has lost a day’s pay when they probably could’ve booked another wedding on that date. Same reason a photographer requires a deposit.

Mine is similar. I had to put down a deposit and cannot remove anyone (but I can add). We just played it safe, we have one gal who couldn't commit to HMU, so we left her off.

Hi, I had to pay 50% deposit for makeup. Not sure about the canceling part. I don’t think they stated anything about that in the contract.

This is standard. The HMUA needs to ensure it is worth her time and is giving up other jobs (possibly larger) to hold your date.

Thanks for all of the feedback. I can see that the deposit is standard but still curious about the cancellation. If any of my bridesmaids back down from getting their makeup done, I’m still on the hook for the entire bill. I don’t think that any would but you never know.
