Do not hire a normal hair stylist from a salon for wedding hair and makeup because they will either be flakey since they do not have a contract or they way over charge (hundreds of dollars to compensate them being away from the salon before they even start charging for the services)

Do not hire a friend! If they are actually not very good it is hard telling them never mind. If there is drama (even when you are sure there never would be) you are going to regret asking them. Also people who aren't professional don't often know the difference between going out makeup and getting married makeup. (I seriously purchased a bunch of stuff on her recommendations and had to exchange it all because it was not at all my color ((seriously you do not cancel out red undertone skin with yellow undertone makeup!!)) or it gives major flash back!)

Do not think DIY makeup is really going to cost less than hiring a professional. I started out with 0 makeup. I maybe had a Walmart foundation and an expired BTS mascara, so in the past year with bad makeup experience after another, I have been buying different products testing them out to learn how to do my own makeup. I think I am finally there and have the right products but it has literally cost me thousands of dollars and I will now have the stress of doing it my self the day of.

Don't be stubborn like me and listen to advice from others!

side note my mm is doing my hair now and I finally know how to do makeup! Also I now have a makeup addiction so you win some you loose some lol

Yikes! For makeup, definitely take advantage of the people and sample opportunities at Sephora. You can get a ton of samples of things like foundation, primer, etc. just for the asking. You can also get a makeover by them if you're buying $50 in product (really easy to do). Also, YouTube is amazing. I basically got super into makeup after my divorce, as a cathartic self care thing. It's definitely not cheap, but it can be super fun! I've been having nightmares, though, about my stylist just not showing up on the wedding day...

Makeup addiction is real! I’m currently a sufferer! I have over 150 eyeshadow palettes (I collect them), at least 20 different foundations, 50+ blushes, bronzers, and highlighters! 😳😳 But I’ve been into makeup for a long time now and I’ve gotten very good at doing it. Im definitely doing my own makeup for my wedding, but only because I have a ton of experience. I agree that you should hire someone that specializes in wedding makeup if you’re not planning to do it yourself. Never hire family or friends for anything for your wedding, just in case things go bad!

I'm so happy I'm DIY'ing everything. I've done pin up modeling, stage makeup, and whatnot for years. It's definitely an addiction once you get into it. A little highlighter and the right color lipstick goes a loooong way though!

Being said I had a really good experience with my first wedding getting my hair done at a salon. I think I'd really freak out if my plans for hair and makeup didn't come out just how I wanted them to or someone tried to take advantage.

Wow I never thought of anyone having problems like this. My makeup and hair stylist is a friend but she's been SUPER helpful. I wanted a halo for my wedding, but didn't wanna pay the price for the kind I wanted, and didn't realize how many questions I would have in regards to where to place the combs, type of combs, circle or C shaped, etc. But she walked me through every step of what she would need to give me the hairstyle I wanted.

We talk several times a week and she did great at my first hair trial. I have my bridal portraits with hair and makeup on 6/22, and she's only charging me $65, and she's coming to me.
That's the same price for my wedding too.

I'm sorry you ladies are having this issue. I really should have considered it before though bc I know about 6 other stylists but I never would have asked any of them about it.

The salon I booked specializes in event makeup. I met them at a bridal show. They had a contract as well. It may be a bit pricier, but it's worth it to have people who know what they are doing.

I actually had my hair and make up done at a salon and they were very reasonably priced. I think i paid $160 total and it included a trial of both! I know i filled out a piece of paper listing everyone getting services, I guess it was a contract. But, i also received email confirmation of the appointment and a reminder phone call a few days before the wedding.
Not all salon stylists are bad. You just have to do research just like with any other vendor.
It sounds like you’ve got it all worked out now though 😊

$1000’s on makeup! Of lord. I try to get my makeup from Sephora, if my skin has a reaction or it’s just a crappy product they have free 60 day returns no questions asked!
